No Time To Be A Pushover

Lynch, as well as other residents, were speechless at what this new neighbor had let loose upon them. Thus, one man had to take some kind of action. Oliver Lynch was 79-years old and had been living for 25 years, comfortably in his neighborhood minding his own business as he went about his days.

Defending Himself

Lynch was logical and had great values but he was strong-willed and no pushover. What was about to happen in the neighborhood was not only going to rattle Lynch but cause him to react. Lynch knew that nothing would happen if he just sat around, he was fond of his neighborhood and as a senior citizen, his living conditions meant a lot to him.

Not Standing For It

He had lived there for a long time and it was home for him. He knew not many people care about the elderly and that to obtain some respect and order it was up to him to do so. He was public about his efforts and feelings towards being shut-down as he said, “I just hate being bullied.”

At first, he was not too worried about the situation until he realized these cinder blocks had been cemented to his very own driveway. This new neighbor was trying to take a piece of Lynch’s driveway for himself. He was having none of it, it was his driveway and he would fight for it.

The Separation

These neighbors didn’t see eye to eye on anything and that was clear. Not only were they opposites, but they just couldn’t agree on anything. However, they didn’t know that this would lead to such a feud, but that’s what happened when Oliver returned home that day.

The Worst Was Yet To Come

This dreaded new neighbor was intent on marking his territory he had even cemented the blocks to the driveway already. Lynch was unable to remove them and would completely disrupt the aesthetic if he so much as tried. Lynch was aware that things were going to get ugly.

He Couldn’t Help But Wonder

Lynch was taken aback by this situation, in all his 79-years something like this had never happened. He surely had seen a lot, but nothing like this. He couldn’t comprehend that someone could do this in his neighborhood and to him.

The Proof Is In The Pudding

These cinder blocks had been cemented and it became evident Lynch would need a different standard of measures to fix this mix-up. he needed to find proof of the actual footage of the land, proving it belonged to him.

Lynch was just hoping to end this and not have to choose either of these. All he wanted was to sort it out friendly, with no courts involved. He was doing everything he could to sort it out but the neighbor would not compromise.

With everyone siding with Lynch and feeling that the neighbor was unjust and insulting- neighbors were worried about the overall view on the neighborhood and the reputation he would then hold. There were no answers and no word from the neighbor. More people from Osceola County heard about the situation and started to get angry about what was going on with Oliver and the new neighbor. They went as far as to say that Lynch was being bullied by the new neighbor.

Getting The Right Outcome

From Oliver’s approach, we can see that sticking to your morals will get you to the outcome that you want, while not betraying who you are. However, there are cases in which things don’t go as nice as it did in this one. Some people go all out just to annoy their neighbors.

Working Through Feuds

It’s isn’t so surprising that some neighbors can work through their arguments within a few weeks or less. On the other hand, there are times where this isn’t the case. In a small neighborhood in Peoria, Illinois, there is a man who has been in a feud for a while now. For over 20 years, in fact.

Isolated And Bullied

The man we are speaking of is Ernie Leas. He’s often felt isolated and bullied by the people who lived near him. It’s gotten to the point where they even call the police on him on a regular basis! But what could cause such a strong response?

Thinking Of Revenge

One of the main reasons that Ernie never got along with his neighbors is that he felt like all his neighbors had a clique – one that he wasn’t part of. So, in order to properly express how he felt in a way that would get under their skin, he thought long and hard of a plan.

The Plan

Ernie decided to treat his house to some painting. However, it wasn’t just any painting. It was a massive middle finger painted on the door to his garage! It was on display for the whole neighborhood to see. As you probably guessed, the neighbors called the cops.

New Addition

Ernie adored the new addition to his house, but he realized something. The painting didn’t match the rest of his house! And so, instead of getting rid of the middle finger, he paid a famous graffiti artist to paint the whole outside of his house in all kinds of colors.

New Addition

More Murals

It didn’t end there – Ernie also wanted there to be murals and pictures incorporated into the paintings. There were also a few “Keep Out” signs incorporated into the designs. As if that wasn’t enough, there was even a truck filled with dirty toilets in the painting! How would the neighbors react to this?

Reactions

Naturally, Ernie’s neighbors were not at all happy about this new development. In fact, the story got so carried away that the media picked up on it and began calling it the “finger feud”. The house needed over 70 cans of paint, and the artist used more than 100 different colors to complete it.

The Inspiration

In fact, the project took about a week to complete. As for the inspiration for the paintings, Ernie said, “I get my ideas by looking at the work that other artists do around town”. While being interviewed by a media outlet, a reporter asked Ernie, “Normally a middle finger is a derogatory symbol. Did that upset anyone in this neighborhood?” “No,” he replied.

Not A Care In The World

A retired firefighter, Ernie seemed to not have a care in the world when his neighbors began complaining about his painted house to the authorities. Jay Davis, deputy director at Peoria Police Department, said, “We started receiving a number of complaints from neighbors, about a variety of things. It started out with an obscene painting on a door”. As it turns out, this was only the beginning.

Ernie was then cited by the Peoria Police for disorderly conduct due to the painting, but the charges were turned down by the prosecutor. This was the point where Ernie created the entire mural around his house for all to see.

“A lot of derogatory terms, a lot of images, a lot of graphics, a lot of text, that looked like really, the house had been tagged from one end to the other,” said Davis. Yet again, the police became involved. The City enforced its sign ordinance, which prohibits homes and businesses from displaying any sign larger than a 2-square-foot area. Would this help?

In response to this, Ernie argued that his mural was inspired by art that’s seen in Downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row. Still, he had complied. What did he do instead? He painted over the huge mural and instead had his home covered in rainbow stripes! Would this be okay with his neighbors?

Checking It Out

After hearing about the new development, a few residents of the town went to Ernie’s house to take a look at it. One of them, Rochelle Roper, said: “I would love to live right next to him. I would love to wake up and come out and say, ‘hey how you doin,’ because he’s an awesome person, and this is upbeat color, you know, color of the rainbows”. However, the man living next door to Ernie didn’t quite feel the same way.

Neighbors’ Thoughts

Harry Domas, said neighbor, said: “Point blank, he is insane”. It turns out that he’s been Ernie’s neighbor for 13 years, and was convinced that Ernie had an ulterior motive behind the paintings. “He’s trying to irritate everybody, tick them off to the point that they sell, and that’s exactly what they’re doing” he continued.

Age-Old Feud

Domas went on, saying that he upset Ernie many years ago when he had a cable company dig under his property to add a line for his home. “And he was insane. Took me for a loop, I said, ‘Ernie, what’s your problem?’ He called me every name in the book, just going crazy,” said Domas. Ernie, however, denied this claim.

Moving Out

“There have been neighbors who have moved out of this neighborhood recently, but this is probably the most peaceful neighborhood I’ve ever lived in, and I love all my neighbors and they all love me,” Ernie said. The Police had said that they visited the neighborhood several times for verbal confrontations, and even offered a free neighborhood mediation service to help them work through their differences to keep it from getting worse.

Not Everyone

However, not everyone agreed to be a part of it, so it never happened. “It’s always best to talk through problems with your neighbors. These things have a way of escalating,” Davis said. The reporter who covered the story asked the neighbors: “Have you guys tried to talk about it?”

No Reasoning

Domas replied: “Oh yeah. Can’t be reasoned with”. On the other hand, Ernie said, “If they want to be friends, I can’t help them. There are just certain things you can’t forgive, and I don’t forget”. For now, the city of Peoria doesn’t have any ordinances about the particular paint colors for homes, so Ernie is safe.
