The Card Was Declined
The man passed through the terminal and back to Alicia. She tried remaining calm when he himself was holding his breath. However, the man knew exactly what would happen in the next few minutes. His card was declined. It was clear to Alicia that the man was upset, even angry. She could see so by the look on his face. When she kindly asked him if he had another way to pay, the man put his hand into his pocket without saying a word. This was the start of a strange interaction between Alicia and her dodgy customer.

The man said to Alicia that he didn’t have another way to pay for the shoes he bargained for. He had no cash or other cards he could use. Gently, Alicia asked him to return the shoes to the right place. The man did as she asked. After he put the shoes back, Alicia knew the man was angry due to the way he walked out of the store. Despite the fact that she felt sorry for him, she still couldn’t give the shoes away since the store wasn’t a charity place – she was simply trying to make a living by doing her job. She didn’t know that she’d see the man again. Only this time around, he wouldn’t be alone.
