The police officer said to her: “No problem, but if you still have those shoes still, I’d like to go ahead and purchase them”. Alicia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She wondered why he was doing this. During all her years working at the pawnshop, this was the first time anything like this happened. She tried looking around since she was so surprised at what was happening. She hoped to see someone else show up in the shop to witness what was happening there. However, it was just her and the two men. This time, she understood she was the only one who could help herself in this situation.

As Alicia glanced at the man again, she noticed the shoes he was wearing were all tattered and filled with holes. That’s when she realized the officer’s intentions and relaxed. She knew the officer’s purpose wasn’t ill-intended. Quite the opposite, actually. He wanted to come and buy replacement shoes for the man next to him. However, she couldn’t understand why the officer waited for all the other people to leave the store.
