Stress Eating
Neither of us wanted to acknowledge that we might not be in love after 16 years of dating. I stopped taking care of myself and got depressed. I did nothing but sit on the couch and eat my cravings for salty foods like nachos and chips. Duncan and I tried not to spend too much time together while he was home because we would always argue. Together, we used to love making nutritious dinners, but when things went apart, we started cooking whatever was easiest, which usually involved frozen entrées that were fatty or pastas with cream sauce.

I could feel the weight starting to creep on, and my discomfort level increased as I put on more weight. And our relationship degraded even more as a result of my self-deprecation. We carried on in this manner for three years. I had been vivacious and fun-loving earlier, but now I was miserable and unhappy and didn’t know who I was anymore. Going into stores to buy larger sizes proved awkward.
