His day couldn’t get any worse, he did think, but evidently, it could. The previous night, due to the unwanted noise that he heard, he was unable to get a good night’s rest. Then this guy put his knees on the driveway so he could see what was under the car. A sickening sound shocked him as he was taking a better look at the concrete. But what was going on on earth beneath the driveway? He had no idea when he purchased and moved into his new house that he was going to find anything like this!
His New Home
It is impossible to determine exactly what you are going to get when you buy a new house. However, after finding a place to live in Luton for such a reasonable price, Simon Marks couldn’t really help himself. The 37-year-old guy took care of all the details and immediately transferred the payment. He did not even question at the time why the owner was trying so hurriedly to get rid of the property.
It Was His First Night
Simon began to unpack his boxes a couple of months after this. He was thrilled to spend the first night at his new home. He went to bed tired after spending the weekend transporting his stuff to the new location. He was happy to set the alarm for 8 in the morning after taking into account the distance between both the house as well as the office. However, as he was lying in the dark, he then heard a weird noise.
Time To Investigate
He was holding it and breathing so that he could listen better. Once more, the noise came, and now he can tell that it was coming from outside of the house. The noise was muted and dull, sounding like gravel on metal. This disturbance intrigued him, so he stood up and looked out of the window at the garden. He was unable to see anything trying to move. Once more, all was quiet, so he brushed and went back to sleep.
Discovery In The Driveway
He placed his Vauxhall Zafira in reverse the following morning. The vehicle did not back out of the parking lot to his great shock but rather slid forward! He went to class and attempted it again. It started to look like the wheel did get caught on something, that being said. Until his car leaped backward and sighed in relief, he revived the engine. He went out after this to take a good look at what had blocked the front wheel.
The Driveway Gave
To have a closer look at it, Simon crouched down. And that was when he noticed that he had cracked the driveway pavers. Not just that, but right before him, the driveway started giving in! As the concrete happened to come apart and collapsed into the earth, he hopped back upon having to hear the snap. It was only when the dust began to settle that he saw a sight that was very unnerving. What was going on in this place?
It Should Not Be There
As far as he knew, the elderly couple who used to live there built the house in the ’70s. This, that being said, was obviously not part of the original plan for the house! He went down on his stomach and began to crawl forward after being convinced that he could rest his height on the pavers. D own there. He saw something that made him grab a trowel and begin digging.
Beneath The Ground
He broke into the dirt soon enough. A chunk of steel hanging down from the soil was uncovered! To get rid of the dirt, he utilized his hands until he could grip the item. After that, with everything he had, he pulled at it. However, regardless of how much strength he put into it, the rusty thing would simply not budge. He dug around it then until he was able to free it. He came to realize that this piece of metal was connected to a bigger object as he saw more and more of it. What might this possibly be?
What Was Hidden There
His mind began to race with images of the sinkhole swallowing up his car as the hole got larger. Even worse, what if the whole house were to sink into this weird void? He had seen what did look like a man-made object below everything after working some more on the hole. This was when he came to realize it was even more sinister than he thought things were. He pulled out his phone and asked for assistance.
They Saw An Old Ladder
His dad, Gerald, rushed to the incident. They began to work on the hole without any equipment or professional tools. They carefully managed to get rid of the concrete crack encircling the metal piece and discovered a rectangular hole down there. They could see a rusty ladder descending into the shadows! They made them feel really uncomfortable. What was the secret passageway under the driveway doing like this? Where it was going, they wondered. They had only one way, in the end, to have the answers to those questions.
They Went Even Deeper
Before he purchased the old place, Simon did make sure to do his homework. It was his obligation, of course, to find out what he was about to get into. He did know that surveys of the ordinances would not help unravel the mystery of this secret tunnel. Before the construction of the house, the data said that it was all vacant land. As the pair began digging deep, a shiver went down his spine.
The dirt was so densely packed that the two of them had to dump the dirt in containers. The bucket of dirt just kept growing exponentially as the hours passed by. In the end, roughly 5 feet of soil could be excavated, which gave them sufficient room to use the latter. The time had come to start investigating! But what did they discover down there?
It Had Hidden Rooms
Simon began making his way down the tunnel, and, once he was halfway through, he felt very strange. He did not want any further exploration. Maybe it’s not safe, after all! He went back to the house to get the selfie stick. He went down the hole after attaching his phone to it. On the mobile screen, he could see that the underground tunnel had two rooms. Gerald had a hypothesis about what they’ve been looking at, but first, it was essential to validate it.
The Secret Beneath The House
For the good overall price of half a million bucks, Simon decided to buy this property. That being said, it did turn out that before the house stood there, the land had been in use for a different reason. Although the older gentleman from whom he purchased it was the initial owner of the house, he did not tell Simon of the hidden truth lying beneath the house. Actually, the noise he heard the night before was the soil providing way beneath the concrete as it tumbled into the secret chamber.
A Strategic Location
While doing some investigations on the estate, Simon and his father ordered to postpone digging. The plot number was checked, which also did help them understand what was going on faster. The plot of land was empty prior to the elderly couple. But Gerald responded by pointing out that it was situated in the city’s pretty strategic place. In the end, though, what gave them a concept was the period when the house was built.
Doing Their Research
“My dad saw it and instantly said it’s an air raid shelter,” Simon stated. “We googled it and found there are quite a few in this area.” They made more research about it, and he finally discovered that it was a shelter that was constructed during the Second World War. He told reporters, “The previous owner must have known it was there and when he built the house and put a garden in… he must have filled it in.”
A Man Called Sir John Anderson
Throughout 1938, at the start of the Second World War, the job of preparing people for war was required to give to a guy called Sir John Anderson. Remember, this hasn’t been a simple path to do. His obligation was to develop a plan that would safeguard Britain’s citizens from the bomb blasts and attacks that were certain to arrive. This was why he drew up a plan to ensure that it would be safe for noncombatants.
Building Backyard Shelters
Along with a group of engineers, Sir John Anderson arranged and aided individuals with the development of simple backyard safe rooms. For these bomb shelters, it was essential to stay close to the house so that they could pull back at any particular time. The structure’s walls were built of a flexible yet lightweight metal that was better than concrete. All in all, more than two million such bomb shelters have been built across the nation. This isn’t what Simon discovered, nevertheless!
The Design Was Different
Gerald was able to tell by taking a look at the chamber that it was not a bomb shelter designed by Sir John Anderson. It was completely accurate, however, that the structure was constructed sometime between 1938. That was pretty close to the bombing that took place near Luton. After having to learn that the small city had become a target, people living in the area felt scared. Many of them would want to guarantee that, no matter what, they would be secured.
A Better Structure
The community came together to make a plan to create a sanctuary for the community. The residents of the area needed to make sure they could have something which would endure air raids. Gerald did know that because it came with two rooms, it was not the typical Anderson-style bunker. It used concrete and bricks on top of that. They also identified a number of artifacts as Gerald and Simon dug deeper!
In one of the rooms in the tunnel, the duo uncovered a national paper clip. During the Second World War, The Herald newspaper was published. One of the headlines stated, “Is this the end of Luton Airport?” But on the other hand, in the midst of the battle, the articles discussed everyday life. The artifact provided them with the opportunity to look at what it was like during the war to live in Britain. What else did they come across down there?
It Was Made By Hand
The duo also managed to stumble into evidence that there was a lot of water and food stored down there before. People wanted nourishment if, after all, they were to hide under the surface. They might have been holed up in shelters for days or even weeks on end. When Simon was interrogated, he stated, “It’s incredible to think it has all been made by hand.”
The Materials Used
There were concrete walls in the underground bunker, which were strengthened with brick and mortar. This managed to give it a buffer that would protect it from air travel. Although Gerald, as well as Simon, had already discovered an amazing finding, this was not yet the end of it. “It’s been a case of dig, dig, dig. We’re about five feet down at the moment, so it’s just another five feet to go until it’s finished. I think we’re going to have to get a skip in because there’s so much rubbish to get rid of,” Simon stated.
That Was Not All
“One of the walls has been bricked up. I’m 90 percent sure we won’t find out any more rooms, but we don’t know. They might have bricked up one of the walls when the house was built to make way for the foundations,” he told the reporters. He also said, “If that’s the case, we’ll just have to leave it.” This story went viral on the internet after some time.
The Arrival Of Reporters
Neighbors, as well as news reporters, swarmed towards the front driveway when Simon and Gerald dug deep in the location. They all wanted to see an incredible discovery. However, after discovering something so essential in his own residence, Simon didn’t really care about the publicity he was obtaining. No, he was more particularly worried about something dissimilar. Mind you. He didn’t spend that much time just digging for stardom!
An Incredible Part Of History
Simon continued to believe that knowing about the sanctuary was essential for everyone. He did not do anything for stardom, that being said. He merely started to feel like it was his duty to shed some light on the nation’s history. If this bit of history was neglected, it would’ve been a real pity. He would want the air-raid shelter to be maintained for future generations.
It Will Not Be Forgotten
Now Simon and Gerald are planning on working on and preserving it. They also hope that it will be proclaimed a historic and significant monument. The duo appears to believe we must never forget about this just because the war has been done for decades. They hope that future generations will be able to go to the shelter and gain more knowledge about this essential period in the recorded history of Britain.
