Here’s the thing about getting older; your perspective, needs, priorities, and style changes. You don’t care about being someone else because you’re already who you are and you’re not about impressing others, but rather about being comfortable with who you are and how you look. You are a woman of class, sophistication, and professionalism. Guess where it all starts? With your hair. We aren’t joking, either. Your hairstyle can transform your face and give you a more youthful look, what, you think all celebrities just rely on cosmetic surgery? These hairstyles will give you a fresh, youthful look, all without breaking the bank.
Hairstyles have come and gone over the years. There are those that, trust me, we’re more than happy to see go and never come back. Not sure what I’m talking about? What about mullets? Yeah, that’s what I thought, although we do know of a few brave souls out there still sporting that look. See, as we get older our hairstyles seem to change. That’s not a bad thing, but we do sometimes need a bit of guidance as to which direction they should be going. Once again there is the exception of those people who haven’t changed their hairdo since they were in preschool. Kind of frightening if you ask me, but hey, we’re all trying to hang onto some part of our youth.
When we imagine getting a makeover we think of pouring out canals of cash to get it done. But the truth is that it does not have to be that way; it doesn’t have to become an activity that requires you to speak to a personal financial advisor – it’s your hair not Trump Tower for goodness sake! Speaking of Trump, perhaps he has a secret about his hair that he’s keeping from us, but that’s a discussion for another time.
This slideshow is here to give you a new look at hairstyles that can make you look years younger, but also there’s more than that. It’s not just about how you look, but also and even more so about how you feel. These easy and cost-friendly hairstyles are intended to give you the confidence to be you! As Oscar Wilde says, “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken!” Now let’s get started.
When you have multiple, uneven layers, they’re known as choppy layers. They create volume and counteract gauntness but be careful about the length, as the sides should be no more than half an inch shorter than the back. It needs to be proportional around the head.
Almost all of the choppy haircuts are created for short hair and are mainly performed through a bob, pixie or A-line cuts. However they can make a totally new fresh impression. Plus, contrasting textures and lines with some color enhancers will take your hairstyle to new heights.
Meet the classic asymmetrical bob with a twist. You’ll feel modern, fresh, and edgy with your cropped look in the back and a smidgen longer look at the front. Wear your look straight or wavy, you can’t go wrong.
However remember that if you really want to make an impact, then the asymmetry in bobs are super significant. If you keep one side the same as the other, it will go by unnoticed.
Chestnut Color Or Chocolate Color With Highlights
There are times when it isn’t the cut aging you but rather the color of your hair. If you want to look a bit younger then go for a lighter look, something like chestnut or chocolate, add some highlights and boom. You look younger already.
Plus the chestnut color gives off a warm, reddish-brown color which adds a more youthful look to your overall face shape. Who needs plastic surgery when all you need is a hair color change up?
If you have a heart or oval face shape then this choppy bob is a life saver, you definitely don’t need to turn to a face lift. Just be sure to not get too many layers! Make sure you tell your stylist to cut your hair while it’s dry for accurate placement of layers.
Cameron Diaz is a great example of a choppy bob done right. Plus, here’s the best part a choppy bob is super low-maintenance chic with a bedhead look. Whether you have have wavy or fine straight hair, as it requires virtually no daily styling, you’re set.
Grown Out Cropped Hair
When you go for this look, make sure to keep the length just above the collar bone for a youthful look. If it gets longer then that, a trim is needed. Did we mention it’s cheaper then a face lift? Or does that go without saying?
Water is your best friend when it comes to maintaining the grown out chopped look. Just fill a spritzer bottle full with water and then spray evenly to get your hair wet but not soaked. Just let your hair air-dry as well.
This look is a classic, the layers help frame your face. If you’ve got a more angular face shape, then be sure to tell your stylist to cut your bob chin-length. If you have naturally tight curls (guilty), you will probably need a bit more layering.
When you add in some choppy, layered sections, you add even more sass and chicness to the overall look. Furthermore always be sure to go to a stylist who has experience with layering bobs. Very important.
Layered Side Swept Bangs Shoulder Length
Sometimes hair gets a bit limp and if this happens, go for this style immediately. It will cause emphasis on your eyes and will give you slight volume within all the layers.
“…you want light, wispy layers in the front starting just below the cheekbone and continuing all the way down,” said the hairstylist Mark Townsend of the Marie Robinson Salon in the Big Apple.
Long and Layered
Are you picking up on the hint? Layers tend to work with just about every face shape and frame. Doesn’t matter if you have super straight hair or a wild curly mane, this look works for all shapes. If you want to opt for a younger look then go for length that is just passing the shoulders.
Just let our girl Jessica Biel drive the point home, her hair is the perfect example of the long and layered look. Plus she’s a huge advocate for natural beauty, no cosmetic surgery needed here, ladies!
Long Blonde Bob
You want to try to be a blonde? Get the long blonde bob then, no really. It’ll make you look tons younger even if you’re not actually a blonde. The look is more conservative and it’s a look you can use from day to night, without losing sophistication.
There is no doubt that lobs are beautiful in whatever texture – straight and sleek or even wavy and messy. Wear it as a downdo, or lift the locks up in a kind of updo or half-up hairstyle. There are so many options, all of which won’t take a ton of time to create either.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a plain lob which is about chin-length, it works. It is not a high maintenance look and it’s far more versatile than you think.
Doesn’t matter what your face shape, hair texture, or complexion is, the long bob (or any bob) is your answer. It’s a classic and universal look, and it might just be what you’re looking for.
Long Layered Pixie Cut
If you want to look sophisticated and polished then go for the longer version of the pixie cut. It gives hair a fuller look while the style draws more attention to the face. This does mean you can grow out your hair without worry.
Now this is a look that is also appropriate for thin hair. However your locks could appear wispy when cut straight, or those with a round base line. Try to layer your hair in various lengths and you’ll gain tons of volume too.
Pixie Bob With Stacked Side Bang
Our hair tends to get thinner as we age, chalk it up to stress or hormones, but it’s pretty inevitable. If you want to fix that (because why wouldn’t you) then go for the pixie bob with a stacked side bang. It keeps things fresh and edgy but not too edgy that your kids will cower in shame.
When you have a stacked side bang, your locks come over-flowing with bounce and energy. And if that’s not the definition of youth, we don’t know what is.
When you go for a pixie cut, you’re pretty daring. No really, it doesn’t make you look much younger then you are but you feel like a different woman. You can even wear your hair all messy, bed head hair, and you’ll still look fresh.
Robin Wright (Forrest Gump and House of Cards, anyone?) is rocking the pixie cut. I mean, Audrey Hepburn would be proud!
Short Cropped Hairstyle
This look is different then a pixie cut because the short chopped cut gives longer layers on top or bangs. Meaning you look a bit more edgy and youthful while not chopping off almost all your hair.
Anne Hathaway defines the short cropped hairstyle – keep it short at the ears and longer on top. You can even part the top layers to the side so they look like sassy bangs.
Shoulder Length Layers
This is a look anyone can pull off. You can wear your hair straight or wavy, and it doesn’t require constant attention to pull off looking chic and sophisticated. It frames your face in a flattering light while appearing thin, yet deceptively full.
No matter what look, Jennifer Aniston is always looking spectacular. Although she has long moved on from “The Rachel” (die-hard Friends fans will understand this.)
Soft Long Layers With Face Framing Pieces
This look helps create volume if you’ve got thin hair and it helps to frame your face so that it looks thinner or smaller. Which is something all women want, no matter what age.
Just use Jennifer Lawrence as a reference. Granted she is only 27 years old, but are we really going to get buckled down by age? Regardless of, all want a youthful look that doesn’t break the bank.
Streaked And Stacked
This look is very low maintenance, very. You can easily just get up in the morning, rum a comb through and you’re done. Get this, you don’t need go to back to your stylist, as layered bobs retain their shape as they grow out. Pretty nifty.
Okay so, Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham has changed her hairstyle more times than we can count, but no matter what look she’s rocking, she’s definitely rocking it.
Volume-ized And Straight
You want something that takes little to no effort but still gives you a sophisticated look? Look no further then the straight cut lob that’s been volume-ized up top. Volume is key for this look. If you can, part your hair different ways to get a different look, sophisticated or party rocker style.
Naomi Watts didn’t need plastic surgery instead she opted for the smooth, straight cut lob. The more affordable option, we’d say.
A wavy bob is chin-length so it helps to elongate the neck. Skip bangs or opt for soft bangs as they will offer the illusion of fuller roots. It’s also far more stylish to give your hair a rumpled texture, rather then straight or way too curly.
This look is also super easy to style. Just use a large barrel curling iron that has no clamp and wrap large portions of hair around once or twice. Hold onto the end of the hair piece so that it does not get curled. Curl only the midshaft so that it takes even less time.
Style your lob with waves and get that perfect kissed by the sun, beach look. You can even choose soft layers and messy curls to emphasize that fresh faced look.
Many have said that the lob was the cut of 2017, so who knows what will be the hot trend of 2018? For now, the lob is still the easiest look you can maintain. Whether it’s up or down or for wavy or straight hair, you’re covered.
The wispy lob offers a length that skims the collarbone (forget plastic surgery) and has wispy pieces – yes, that’s how the name came to be. The pieces grazing the collarbone slim the face down. Now who doesn’t want that?
Heidi Klum is the walking definition of perfection, and maybe it starts with her long legs but come on, her hairstyle is just as important. Plus the wispy lob is considered an barely there look so you’re covered on that end.
Short Bob with Soft Ends
This sleek and smooth hairstyle goes past the chin and the ends of the hair, particularly at the forward edges are textured with light point cutting to give a softer edge. This instantly gives your face a more youthful look.
When it comes to mastering soft curls on a short bob, your best friend is texture. Texture is what gives you a completely different look. Compile almost all of your hair to one side, in an off-centre part, and add some texture to it.
It’s even in the name! Curls are the game changer here. The addition of curls help soften your overall appearance and give the face an instant youthful lift. And everyone goes home happy.
“Youthful, buoyant waves change the way the hair naturally falls to distract attention from signs of aging on the face,” says hair stylist Mercedes Parrilli from George the Salon in Chicago, Illinois.
So an angled bob that just grazes the bottom of your jawline gives you an edgy look and is alwbrays the right anti-ageing haircut ladies. If you have fine hair then you should cut the ends in a blunt way as this gives the illusion that your hair is thicker.
Here’s the truth about angled bobs – they are actually the most versatile of all haircuts! Wear it straight or wavy, style updos or half up hairstyles, it doesn’t matter. It all works.
No way were we going to leave out the classic bob. This cut gives your face an instant face lift as it allows for more focus from the chin towards the nape of your neck. Additionally it gives the impression of raised cheekbones and a higher jawline.
Precision, cool, and calm – that’s the classic bob through and through. Plus, a classic bob flatters any face shape so you shouldn’t worry about chopping off you locks for a bob.
The blunt cut hairstyles going around are an ever green style and is often considered one of the most common hairstyles to help make you look younger. This cut just looks super versatile too.
Ladies, remember that all of the freshest hairstyles, whether it’s bangs or ends or short or long, has one thing in common: a straight, blunt cut. Blunt cuts are literally breathing new life into all of the boyish cropped styles floating around.
The heavy bang look is a timeless classic. It offers a soft full fringe and heavy bangs help to hide fine lines more than anything else out there. Plus if you’re in your 30s, this look really flatters your face.
When talking about heavy bangs, you can’t not mention Zooey Deschanel. Deschanel has been the Queen of heavy bangs for as long as can remember, whether it’s on-screen or off, she knows how to style her entire look to perfection.
Thick Wavy Locks
These thick wavy locks give your face a natural face lift and it’s a hairstyle that is low maintenance. Just throw your hair into a pony, grab a curler, grab thick chunks of hair and curl away. A few minutes later, take the pony off and add a bit of hairspray. Ta-dah!
Keira Knightley is the queen of the thick wavy lock – she’s been sporting this look for years and it never gets old. Everything about her look is flawless, elegant, and simple.
Volume with Long Layers
When you’re looking to create volume in your hair then go with long layers as it looks bouncy and just adds overall movement. So yes, you can forget the plastic surgery as a hair cut is a much cheaper and less harmful alternative!
Long layers will add some lightly textured tips, especially to a flattering length that is just below the chin. You get extra depth and dimension with this look.
Off Center Part
When you go with an off center part then it allows for a few swinging strands of hair to flow down and offer a youthful charm. Using a center part for medium to long hair offers a different hairstyle in your every day routine.
Now this is one look you don’t need to take Revenge on. (Sorry about the pun!) And usually you may even accidentally create the style when you’re attempting to make a center part.
If you’ve got short hair then this look is for you. This looks helps to balance facial features and creates flattering symmetry! All you need is a few drops of pure argan oil in order to add shine and smooth out your hair. Once your hair is completely dry, use a finishing spray for a textured look but with moderate control.
Steven Pearlman, MD, from New York City who is a facial plastic surgeon, says, “A style with this kind of volume helps to balance facial features and create flattering symmetry.”
The Undone Bob
This shaggy look helps to create a more youthful look, which is the goal here. To get the look you need to boost your roots with a volumizing mousse, such as Suave Volumizing Mousse but before you blow dry, be sure to follow up with a small curling iron. This will create a slight wave near the ends!
Yes, this is a look that is best suited for short hair. However seeing as how it’s low-maintenance, you can learn a lot of mastering this look.
The classic pixie, when its done right, it helps to highlight a strong bone structure. And a haircut is much better alternative then a pricey plastic surgery. With this classic, short hairstyle you look great and don’t need salon color either.
Style this look with volume spray but all over so that it provides lift to the roots and adds volume, then finish the look off with a hair paste (like Redken Rough Paste 12 Working Material).
Amped-up layers create fullness just above the cheekbones which in turn narrows the jawline and brings attention to the eyes. Another added bonus is this look frames the face and helps thinner hair appear fuller.
Be sure to use a volumizing spray on damp hair for the added fullness. The goal after this is to create as much lift as you possibly can by lifting roots and drying them upwards. When your hair is dry, add a touch of finishing spray, and you can also wind sections around a large curling iron in alternating directions for a more tousled look.
Did you know that soft waves help reverse the effects of facial volume loss that comes with age? So what you want to do to get that soft, feminine, youthful look is to wind sections of your hair in various sizes (as you don’t want the sections too perfect) around a large-barrel iron, or just twist 1″ sections of hair as you blow dry. When you’re all done, be sure to pull pieces of your hair forward and around your face.
MD Heidi Waldorf, an associate clinical professor at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in its dermatology department says, “Volume loss makes your face shape look more rectangular, with sharp angles that are more masculine than the classic female heart-shaped face.”
A chignon help to show off the angle of the jaw, this is crucial in showcasing a more youthful look and it flatters the contour of the face as well. Start off with a diagonal side part that starts above one eye and runs back to the middle of the top of your head. Then be sure to gather all of your hair at the nape of your neck and begin to loosely twist it into a low bun. Then secure the look with bobby pins around the chignon.
“A chignon shows off the angle of the jaw, which can be a very youthful and flattering contour of the face,” reveals Whitney Bowe, an MD from New York City, who is a dermatologist that specializes in skin rejuvenation.
Okay ladies, this one is pretty important. Women over 40 tend to almost always look far more feminine with mid-length hair that has a youthful and lively movement on the ends. If you have stiff and overdone volume to your hair then you’ll only look “outdated.” If you have medium length hair, the flipped ends are for you.
The best and easiest way you can avoid the stiffness is to use a round brush to subtly flip the ends of your hair, alternating between flipped up and flipped under as you blow dry. Pretty simple!
A braided crown creates a subtle but rather effective pull on the facial skin for a faux lifted look so forget the face lift, just get a crown. If you’re not sure how to get the look then follow along with these instructions – it’s quite simple to follow. Part your hair, wet or dry, right down the middle and into two pigtails, secure each end with a hair tie. Then remove the ties in order to braid each tail, then re-secure the ends with hair ties. Next, you need to take a braided pigtail and cross it over the top of your head to the opposite side. Finally, secure with hairpins and do the exact same with the other braid.
MD Diane Walder from Miami is a cosmetic dermatologist who said, “…this style creates a subtle but effective pull on facial skin for a faux lifted look.”
If you have long hair, turn to this modern twist to create the idea of elongating the sides of your face as they draw the eye up from the cheekbones and all the way to the fullness of the crown. Try to wash your hair the day before so that the natural oils and live-in texture will offer a better grip. Add texturizing powder to your roots before you pull your hair back into a high but loose ponytail. Then, use both of your hands (important) to gently twist the ponytail’s end into a bun.
“A modern twist creates a beautiful profile, elongating the sides of your face by drawing your eye up from the cheekbones all the way to the fullness of the crown,” Parrilli (the hair stylist) said.
A high ponytail draws the eyes up and gives facial skin a gentle upward lift, a free face lift if you will. Just lightly tease the hair around the crown of your head for extra volume. But do this before you gather your hair some 1-2 inches above eye level at the back of your head. Make sure that you leave out a few pieces of hair to help frame the face before tying it securely.
Bowe says of the high ponytail, “When we’re young, our faces look like an upside-down triangle—with the widest part, stretching across the eyes and the point at the chin.” She adds, “As we age, that triangle turns upside down, as gravity pulls the cheeks down and creates shadows on our lower face.”
The low, pulled pony helps create a subtle yet, centralized pull on the skin which lifts the cheeks and boosts the brow. Again, a natural and free face lift. This will draw attention up and create a natural face lift around the forehead and eyes.
Start off by teasing your hair, then gather it into a ponytail some 1-2 inches above the nape of your neck. Next, split the ponytail into halves, one should be a top half and one a bottom half. Then tease the back of the top section of your hair to boost the pony’s volume.
You guessed it, a top knot quite literally lifts your face and helps draw attention to the cheeks and eyes. Just look at Jenny from the Block to drive the point home. The secret to the perfect top knot is with hair that hasn’t been washed in a day or two.
Spritz a hair refresher or some dry shampoo onto roots in order to absorb excess oil. Do this before you brush the hair into a very high ponytail and secure it with a hair band. To finish, take the pony, twist it into a very tight knot, and pin into place with bobby pins.
If you have an uneven tone or texture of the skin (acne scars or brown marks) then soft curls are the answer as they distract from those skin irregularities. Be sure to curl sections of your hair with a large-barrel iron and roll each section, securing with a clip to set. Once cooled, let them down and finger comb just a bit. However, do NOT, we repeat, do not add hairspray!
“If you have acne scars or brown marks, soft curves reflect light in a way that distracts from those skin irregularities,” Bowe says. Moreover Mariano says, “Tight, structured, shellacked curls not only look dated but make your features appear sharper and harsh.”
When avoiding hairspray, you want to have free-flowing and touchable curls which offer soft features and even make hair look healthier. Just use Demi Moore as an example.
Not only do bangs help hide forehead wrinkles but if you sweep them over to the side, you are draings attention to the outsides of your cheekbones, which helps give the illusion of a wider face and more youthful fullness.
If you gently arch fringe then you show off soft, feminine features. Bangs can help a circular face appear fuller, so getting the right bangs for the right shape is crucial.
A blunt, one-length cut really defines your face when it’s styled stick-straight, shiny, and even with a sharp part. This helps bring a soft, more romantic look and glow to your overall look.
Our girl Nicole Kidman is a Hollywood legend who needs no introduction and neither does that haircut of hers. Kidman isn’t one to change up her look, she has worn it straight and even for years. (Unless it’s for a film role).
Medium Layered Haircut
By adding some subtle honey highlights makes this look even more incredible, especially if you have a fair complexion. To pull this off properly, make sure the longer locks graze the shoulders, while the top layers are cut gradually shorter.
Just use the Gossip Girl actress and singer Taylor Momsen as an example of how to perfectly execute the medium layered haircut. Trust us, you don’t need a plastic surgeon!

If you blow dry, then be sure a round brush and flick the ends of your hair towards the back. Stylists have stated in the past that this look is really one of the best haircut styles for all women. I mean, can you imagine a plastic surgeon saying the same thing? Hmm.
Stacked Bob Medium Haircut
Now this particular hairstyle captures the youthful charm of a short to medium cut (yes, we do also mean for women over 50). This look can also appear more voluminous if you gradually move from shorter to longer strands. If you happen to get some bangs with this look then you’ll have the bonus of a narrower frame.

Some other advantages include: bangs are great when you need to cover a hairline that starts starts farther back on the head and they add volume to flat hair. Remember that you need to trim them every few weeks and they do require maintenance.
