Meghan Markle hasn’t had the easiest time since she’s become a royal, even more so since she and Harry announced their decision to step down. This new attention has also been difficult for her family to adjust to, especially Meghan’s Mom, Doria Ragland. Not only has Dora received a lot of attention because of her relationship with Oprah Winfrey brings her even more into the spotlight. It may be shocking to hear how Oprah actually won over Ragland.
When Oprah first met Meghan’s mom, she supposedly was in a terrible mood. She first visited the talk show host’s home, an $88 million residence, in April 2018. Apparently Ragland went home with her hands full…but what do you think she got?
Why Was She Invited?
Ragland was at the residence because Oprah wanted a first-hand interview with Markle’s mother. Many members of Markle’s family had spoken to the press before, aside from Ragland. This was her first time and many speculated that she showered her with presents.
Confirming The Rumors
In June 2018, Oprah confirmed the speculations around her visit and said that she did give Ragland a few presents. However, they didn’t exactly meet their expectations. While the story was that she left with “laden with gifts” this wasn’t exactly the case.
A Personal Meeting
Oprah Winfrey thought a lot about the meeting between her and Markle’s mother. She carefully planned their time together and even looked into her interests. She knew that she was good at Yoga so she told her to bring her matt in case they wanted to play.
Oprah explained that Ragland expressed her love for kumquats and coincidentally, Winfrey had a tree in her backyard! So one of the gifts she gave her was a basket of fresh kumquats and they enjoyed a delicious dessert served with this favored fruit.
Oprah was entertained by the fact that people were saying she was bribing Ragland with lavish gifts. In reality, she just gave her kumquats, and according to Winfrey, “If kumquats can get you an interview, I’m all for it!”
Setting Them Straight
Although Oprah set everyone straight about what happened with Meg’s mother, the rest of the world wasn’t quick to believe it. There were those who even said that she was spending time with Ragland to score an invitation to the wedding.
Some commentators went as far as to say “Oh, come on, Oprah, be honest for once. Why else would you invite someone over that you did not know? You also wanted an invite.” On the other hand, many were quick to defend the talk show host.
Oprah never got something extravagant for Ragland, but she was involved in compassionate gift-giving with some other people. After her co-star Mindy Kaling from, A Wrinkle In Time, brought her newborn to the world, Oprah showered her with an over the top present.
Exceeding Her Expectations
Kaling admitted to USA Today that everyone’s deepest dreams are to be told that two men will be arriving at your home in U-Haul truck, sent by Oprah Winfrey. Kaling wasn’t quite sure what it was, but when she saw it she couldn’t believe her eyes.
She Never Saw Something Like It Before
The present Oprah provided the actress with, was a hand-carved bookcase that was more beautiful than she had ever seen before. It was filled with classic and critical books in children’s literature. She gave the same one to Beyonce and Jay-Z when they had Blue Ivy in 2012.
Not Just A Wedding
Let’s get back to Oprah and Ragland. These two were seen at Meghan’s wedding with Prince Harry at the Windsor Castle. Oprah told Entertainment Tonight in 2018 that although the ceremony was a wedding, it was really so much more.
The Start Of Something Big
Oprah explained that the wedding was essentially a cultural movement and a platform that instilled hope in everyone watching. She added that for those who were actually there or watching on TV could not have missed the change that happened in the middle.
On Top Of The World
Oprah spoke about the wedding day in an interview with British Vogue where she commended the sermon by Bishop Michael Curry. She said that she left the celebration inspired by the concept of love and its power.
Oprah may be the generous, kindhearted woman she is today because of how she was raised. Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to a teenage mother. She was raised in poverty and had quite a traumatic upbringing.
Her Big Break
Although Oprah had a challenging childhood, she put it behind her and established herself. She started out as a news anchor and then started her own show The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986, which become the most accomplished daytime talk show in all of American Television.
A Gifts Girl
The show lasted for 25 years and it became a ritual that Oprah would give things away every episode. Once she even donated an $8 million car! That’s not all, in 2010 she invited 300 of her top fans to Australia.
But There’s More…
While you follow her generosity on television, there’s so much more behind the scenes. When she reached her fame she founded the charity Oprah’s Angel Network and the South African Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy For Girls. That’s not all, she has also donated a huge sum to several charities.
As you have previously read, a lot of people have said that the only reason why Oprah wanted an interview with Meghan’s mom is so that she would receive an invite for the royal wedding. But what exactly is so special with this wedding? Aside from the fact that this is a royal wedding (which is certainly special already), what exactly sets it apart from other weddings as well as the previous royal weddings? Let’s take a look at the differences between Meghan and Kate’s weddings to see what the differences are!
Their Engagement Rings
Kate Middleton was given an engagement ring by Prince William that belonged to William’s late mother, Princess Diana. The 12-carat ring, which features an oval blue sapphire with cut faces and is now worth $400,000, features an oval blue sapphire with cut faces and is now worth $400,000. It is surrounded by stunning solitaire diamonds. Meghan’s engagement ring features two of Princess Diana’s diamonds framing a center stone purchased by Prince Harry in Botswana, where the now-married couple first fell in love. Meghan’s engagement ring is worth an estimated $350,000.
Kate Is British
When Kate Middleton’s relationship with Prince William was revealed, there were some skeptics, but the couple appeared to be a perfect match. Kate attended St. Andrew’s School, Downe House School, Marlborough College, and the University of St Andrews, where she met her future husband, and grew up in a wealthy Berkshire family. Kate and William are likely to meet because Kate’s family has many aristocratic connections; her father was born into wealth and had ties to the British aristocracy.
Megan Is From LA
Meghan pursued her acting career, whereas Kate was born into wealth and was raised to pursue a proper education and find a suitor. She attended an all-girls Catholic private school in Los Angeles before transferring to Northwestern University to study theater and international studies. Meghan’s father was a television director of photography and lighting, and her mother was a social worker and a yoga instructor.
How They Waved To The Crowd
Duchesses When Kate and Meghan become members of the British royal family, they are expected to give the perfect regal wave. Royal brides are expected to wave to the crowds during the carriage ride following the wedding ceremony as a sign of gratitude for the people who have gathered to celebrate. Meghan’s wave is more relaxed and spaced out than Kate’s, which keeps her fingers close together. Both ladies keep their movements to a minimum while waving to the crowds.
Prince Charles’ Different Attires
Prince William and Prince Harry’s father wore noticeably different outfits on two of his sons’ most important days, while Prince Charles’ second wife Camilla Parker wore similar outfits to both royal weddings. For the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Charles donned his royal regalia. At Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, Prince Charles wore a simple grey suit that complemented Camilla’s light pink dress and hat.
Walking The Aisle
It’s difficult to imagine the amount of pressure Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle were under on their big days in front of the world as they walked down the aisle. The Duchess of Cambridge was accompanied by her father, Michael Middleton, on her special day. Unfortunately, the Duchess of Sussex’s father was unable to attend the big event in London due to health issues during the month leading up to her wedding. Meghan walked down the aisle on her own before Prince Charles met her halfway.
Their Wedding Reception Dress
Following their royal weddings, each Duchess donned a new gown and attended a reception hosted by Prince Charles for each of his sons and their new wives. Kate wore a classic white Alexander McQueen gown to her reception. According to reports, Meghan’s gown was designed by Stella McCartney and cost $157,000. While wearing the stunning gown, she was seen holding hands with Prince Harry as he assisted her into a blue vintage Jaguar.
Kissing The Bride
The first kiss of the newlywed royal couple drew millions of viewers. Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge kissed for the first time on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after their wedding ceremony at Westminister Abbey. Outside of St. George’s Chapel, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex shared their first wedded kiss after the wedding ceremony. Both couples were beaming with joy as the crowds cheered them on.
What The Middletons Wore
Michael and Carole Middleton, Kate’s parents, are well-known members of British society. The family has a long history of prominent lawyers and is well-educated. They’re no strangers to the British royals, as the two families have been friends for a long time. Michael attended his daughter’s royal wedding in a suit and top hat, while the Mother of the Bride wore a light blue gown. They wore similar outfits to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018.
One of the reasons why so many people tune in to watch a royal wedding is that it is anything but ordinary. One feature that distinguishes royal weddings from the rest is the incredible headwear worn by the brides for the occasion. Kate wore a Cartier tiara to her wedding, which she received on her 18th birthday from Queen Elizabeth II. Meghan was decked out in a tiara that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth II. The Diamond Bandeau Tiara was created in 1932. Meghan’s sapphire center stone was replaced with a diamond on her wedding day.
The Beckhams Were There Too
David Beckham, a star soccer player, and his wife, Victoria Beckham, a fashion designer and former pop star, attended both royal weddings. David wore a grey morning suit and top hat to Prince William and Kate’s wedding, while Victoria wore a sleek navy dress and hat. For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, the couple wore similar colors, with David sporting a close haircut and beard instead of a top hat. According to reports, the celebrity couple donated their wedding gowns to charity.
The Royal Cakes
The wedding cake for Prince William and Kate was designed by Fiona Cairns and featured an incredible eight tiers. For a total of $160,000, the couple chose fruitcake as their cake flavor and had a chocolate cake made for guests who didn’t like fruitcake. Prince Harry and Meghan chose a lemon sponge cake with elderflower syrup and Amalfi lemon curd for their wedding cake. Claire Ptak is said to have spent $60,000 to $75,000 on the cake.
The Wedding Bouquets
Despite the fact that Kate and Meghan’s wedding bouquets appear to be very similar, there are some significant differences between them. Middleton’s delicately small bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly and features all-white flowers, each symbolizing something the couple wishes for their marriage, such as happiness and steady love. Meghan’s bouquet, designed by Philippa Craddock, included flowers chosen by Prince Harry and symbolic of their marriage’s goals, such as dedication and love.
Kate Had A Maid Of Honor While Meghan Had Page Boys
As expected, Pippa Middleton, Kate’s younger sister, was asked to serve as her Maid of Honor and carry her train down the aisle at Westminster Abbey. Before Kate’s wedding day, the two sisters were extremely close and used to live together. Despite having several of her closest friends in attendance at her royal wedding, Meghan did not choose a Maid of Honor. At St. George’s Chapel, Meghan’s train was carried by two page boys.
What The Grooms Wore
Both Prince William and Prince Harry served in the military and, as is customary for royal grooms, wore their uniforms to their weddings. Colonel William was dressed in the red uniform of the Irish Guards. He was the first royal groom to wear red since Captain Mark Phillips in 1973. Prince Harry wore a military uniform from the Blues and Royals on his wedding day. He chose to wear a Major’s uniform despite his appointment as Captain-General of the Royal Marines.
What The Duchess Of Cambridge Wore
The entire world was anticipating Kate Middleton’s wedding gown to the future King. Sarah Burton designed an Alexander McQueen gown for the Duchess of Cambridge. The dress, which is said to have cost $450,000, was a hit with viewers, who praised it for its combination of tradition and modern elegance. Kate wore a gown from the Royal School of Needlework with a nine-foot train and handcrafted lace. With 58 organza-covered buttons and Rouleau loops, the dress’s back was intricately detailed.
Kate’s Attire In Meghan’s Wedding
According to tradition, no one except the bride should wear white to a wedding. Many people assumed that the Duchess of Cambridge had broken the rules on this one at first glance. Kate’s elegant Alexander McQueen coat, however, appeared to be a primrose yellow in different lighting. Three weeks after giving birth to Prince Louis, Kate looked stunning in the light-yellow coat, which she paired with a Philip Treacy hat.
What The Duchess Of Sussex Wore
On her wedding day, the Duchess of Sussex wore a Givenchy silk gown designed by Clare Waight Keller. The dress was unadorned with lace or other embellishments except for an open boat neckline. The Duchess did wear a blue dress made from a piece of fabric she wore on her first date with Prince Harry. Despite her modest train, Meghan’s veil was an incredible 16.5 feet long.
The Brides’ Mothers
Carole Middleton didn’t want the Duchess of Cambridge, her daughter, to be overshadowed on her special day. Her pale blue gown, designed by Catherine Walker, was the perfect shade for the spring wedding. The Mother of the Bride looked overjoyed on Kate’s wedding day. Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, flew in from Los Angeles to express her support for Prince Harry and Meghan. Meghan looked as happy as ever as she married her prince charming in a light green Oscar de la Renta gown.
The Evening Wedding Reception
The evening reception follows the royal wedding. Not everyone who attends the lavish weddings is invited to the evening receptions. Most guests changed into new outfits after the wedding for the magical night, which was not open to the public. Buckingham Palace hosted an evening reception for Prince William and Kate Middleton. The reception for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, on the other hand, was held at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Hall. Both events included toasts and well wishes to the newlywed couples, as is customary.
Everyone is still buzzing about the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s second child, Lillibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor who was born in June 2021. However, now and again we all like to stroll down memory lane and look back at Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding. This time we think it’s a great idea to see which A-list celebrated and guests made an appearance. And of course, what they all were wearing. With guests like Amal Clooney, Victoria Beckham, and Oprah, it’s no surprise that everyone’s eyes were glued to their screens. Let’s check out what the biggest stars wore to the 2018 royal wedding…
Pippa Middleton and James Matthews
It was only natural that English socialite and sister of Kate Middleton, Pippa Middleton along with her husband, James Matthews were amongst the many wedding guests. Pippa wore a pale green Hepburn dress by Fold and paired it with Jimmy Choo heels. Pippa and James were newlyweds themselves at this wedding as they had just tied the knot in May 2017.
Amal and George Clooney
It’s no surprise that Mr. and Mrs. Clooney were invited to this royal wedding. And just a few weeks before that Amal turned heads at the Met Gala. So, naturally, this gorgeous couple did the same at Meghan Markle And Prince Harry’s wedding. Heartthrob George Clooney wore a light gray suit, while the stunning Amal resembled a ray of sunshine in a yellow ensemble by Richard Quinn.
Of course, the guest list included the amazing Oprah Winfrey! But the big question is, what did Ms. Winfrey wear? She showed up in an elegant light-pink dress that reached her knees by Stella McCartney. Oprah’s hat is a vintage Philip Treacy that had been in her closet since 2005. This was all a last-minute decision and apparently, her team worked super hard to get her looking so fabulous.
Abigail Spencer and Priyanka Chopra
Next, we have two of the bride’s closest girlfriends, Priyanka Chopra and Abigail Spencer. They both looked absolutely stunning at the royal wedding. Spencer, who is Markle’s Suits co-star wore a blue-and-white polka-dot dress by Alessandra Rich while Chopra opted for a lavender Vivienne Westwood dress with a matching hat that was created by the designer Philip Treacy.
Queen Elizabeth II
Her Majesty chose a bright lemon and lime with a touch of purple outfit for her grandson’s wedding. Stewart Parvin is a British bridal designer and also the official royal dressmaker, he was responsible for the Queen’s vivacious ensemble. The Queen opted for something bright and bold. She also accessorized her outfit with black heels and back while wearing pearl jewelry.
Patrick J. Adams & Troian Bellisario
Meghan Markle’s TV husband Patrick J. Adams was obviously also one of the many guests that attended the royal wedding. Alongside him was his wife gorgeous Troian Bellisario. Bellisario opted for a cream dress with a simple fascinator and a pair of stunning gold heels. While Adams rocked it in a black suit and burgundy tie.
Serena Williams & Alexis Ohanian
Longtime friend of Meghan Markle Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian also attended the royal wedding service at St. George’s Chapel. Tennis sensation, Williams looked ravishing in her pale pink Versace dress and paired the chic look with matching pink heels and an extravagant tulle headpiece. Her husband looked great too as he stood by William’s side.
Idris Elba and Sabrina Dhowre
English actor Idris Elba and his wife Sabrina Dhowre were honored to have been invited to the royal wedding. Elba kept it simple yet formal when he chose to wear a black Givenchy suit while the magnificent model, Sabrina Dhowre stunned in a full Gucci look. Even though not many fans agree, we definitely think the couple looked incredible!
Countess Karen Spencer
For those who aren’t familar with Countess Karen Spencer, we’ll give you a brief breakdown. Countess Karen Spencer is married to Charles Spencer who is the late Princess Diana’s brother. So of course, the couple would be invited to the wedding. Karen Spencer wore a custom Pamella Roland purple capelet dress, with an exquisite bow disc hat. To conclude the look her husband, Charles wore a matching purple tie.
Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford
English actress, Carey Mulligan and her musician husband, Marcus Mumford were also amongst the A-list celebs that attended the 2018 royal wedding. Mulligan opted for a semi-sheer floral Erdem Pre-Fall 2018 dress, and we really think she looked fantastic. The star topped off her look with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s ‘Lucy’ heels. And her heartthrob husband didn’t look too shabby either.
Actress Cressida Bonas opted for the most perfect summery Eponine London which she paired with an elegant feathered fascinator. Headwear was an obligatory part of the dress for women, and even though this may be quite tricky for some Bonas definitely looked the part. For those who didn’t know, the beautiful Cressida actually dated Prince Harry for two years after being introduced by Princess Eugenie.
Charlotte Riley & Tom Hardy
English actor Tom Hardy and his wife also attended the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Charlotte Riley looked stunning in her floral midi dress with frill detailing and matching fascinator. While Hardy opted for a sleek navy suit with a matching tie and sported his very bald head thanks to his role as Al Capone in his film Fonzo.
Lady Kitty Spencer
Next up we have another gorgeous royal. Kitty Spencer is the daughter of Charles and Karen Spencer, which makes her a first cousin to Prince Harry. Without a doubt, Kitty turned many heads at the royal wedding. She wore a green Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda corseted gown featuring hand-painted floral detailing. The look was finished off with perfectly coordinated orange heels, a green fascinator, plus a diamond necklace which enhanced the overall glamour. She was said to be one of the best-dressed guests at the event.
Julia Carey And James Corden
British actor and talk show host, James Corden, who Americans recognize from The Late Late Show with James Corden and Carpool Karaoke also attended the British royal along with his stunning wife, Julia Carey. Corden sported a longline suit jacket, grey striped trousers, and a crisp white shirt. To complete the look, James teamed his outfit with a classic black tie and patent brogues. Meanwhile, Julia opted for a light pink dress that showed off her figure and paired it with a matching fascinator. Her ensemble was paired with nude stilettos.
