Let me introduce you to the septuplets of McCaughey: Alexis, Brandon, Joel, Kelsey, Kenny, Jr., Natalie, and Nathan. They were brought into the world by Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey on November 19, 1997. An introduction like this might not be necessary! But then again, two decades ago, their birth was genuinely astonishing for everyone all over the world, as they were the world’s first surviving septuplets in the world. And yet there is more to their story to tell. They intrigued the mass media, which, as they grew older and became the outstanding individuals they are now, reported their great achievements. Well, how’s the family doing right now? Keep reading to find out!
Where Are They?
Do you want to know how the McCaughey couple and the septuplets are doing right now? Since taking over the news all over the world, most of those who knew their background would have wondered what had happened to them two decades ago. It was indeed a historic moment for most of us! It’s nice to know that they’ve grown into such amazing people, regardless of their differences in personalities, interests, as well as hobbies, and that they think of each other as best friends.
What’s The Update?
Would you like to know more about McCaughey Septuplets? You’re not the only one out there! We have obtained information and would like to share with you all these reports about the life of the lovely McCaughey family. We bet you have many questions right now, as curiosity crawls through your head. How old are they? Where are they living? Have they all grown healthy? How do they look? During pregnancy and birth, were there no complications? These are just a few of the questions we might be able to answer!
Welcoming Seven Children All At Once
Bobbi McCaughey bore seven beautiful babies in Des Moines, Iowa, on November 19, 1997. The septuplets were a combination of four boys and three girls. They were born nine weeks earlier than the expected date of Bobbi’s delivery. She had gone through a cesarean section, and all her little ones were out of her belly in just six minutes! Bobbi’s perception that her babies were safe and healthy, even though she was worried about the risk of pregnancy and childbirth, is a great relief to her. Imagine what she’s been eating for nine months?
Welcome To The World
For Dr. Paula Mahone of the Iowa Methodist Medical Center to handle the world’s first case of septuplets, it must be an exciting and challenging experience. Given the risks and consequences of pregnancy and birth, it is still successful! It seems that every septuplet weighed between 2.5 and 3.4 pounds, but not all children were born healthy. Two of McCaughey’s septuplets have developmental issues affecting their motor skills. The other children had only minor health issues as they grew older, but nothing more severe than the other two.
Some Of Them Had Health Problems
It is a miracle indeed that all seven children were safely brought into the world, even though they and their mother were at risk. Though not everyone was born healthy. Alexis McCaughey was born with Hypotonic Quadriplegia, a condition that weakens all four limbs. He was born with only around 2 pounds of weight and is second in the order of the babies. Despite the weak muscle tones of her arms, legs, and torso, Alexis was unable to or having a hard time holding positions.
More Health Issues
They were the first surviving Septuplets known worldwide. People’s eyes were on them until the news of pregnancy with the seven children came into the world. People have been briefed on their state of affairs and well-being. In the children’s order, Nathan was fourth, and he weighed 3 pounds, and he also had health issues, same as Alexis. Nathan was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia. This condition causes the muscles in his legs to tighten uncontrollably.
Four Out Of Seven
Everyone might have been interested in how the septuplets of McCaughey, and the married couple, dealt with those situations back then. It’s truly amazing to be able to give birth to all the seven children, but the couple had to face another dilemma. Natalie, in baby order, was third, weighing about 2 pounds, and Alexis, in baby order, was second, weighing about 2 pounds, had severe reflux, and had to be fed by a pump.
What The Public Had To Say
If you’re one of the people who saw the news of McCaughey Septuplets when it came out, what would your reaction be? Would you support the family, or are you worried about their situation? The public then reacted to a combination of good and bad remarks. Countless people have wished them all the best, and hope they keep all seven children. Others, though, were unhappy with the situation, and even scolded by the letters they got.
Well-Known Around Town
After gaining massive publicity, McCaughey has undergone different kinds of medication. They may have been overwhelmed by everyone’s reaction, but they had to deal with it despite the shocking news they brought all around the world. Bobbi told the 2007 Baptist Bulletin of those who had come to their house to see their septuplets. “We had strangers come around to the back door, knock, and ask if they could hold a baby,” Bobbi said. Why, if you were to have a choice, wouldn’t want it? Even the U.S. President felt the same way!
A Call From The President
Getting a phone call from the U.S. President in your daily life might be the last thing on your mind. That was not the case with the McCaughey family, though. Around the year McCaughey Septuplets was born, President Bill Clinton was appointed to the Oval Office for another term of office. He was amazed by the remarkable story of the McCaughey’s that he called them out to give them his warm blessings personally. “Everybody up here at the White House has been sitting here wide-mouthed.”
Not only did the president remember McCaughey’s family, he even called them! “All of us who raised one or two kids, and three, are just amazed. But I admire you, and I think it’s great, and I hope it will be a great adventure for you the whole way through”, Bill Clinton told Bobbi. For all the mothers out there, giving birth was indeed a scary experience. Imagine if you gave birth to seven, you’re going to be one of the bravest mothers in the world.
Visit To The White House
Imagine if you could ever walk inside the White House and meet the President of the United States, and congratulate you on what you did? It may have been the case with the McCaughey family, as the President himself invited them to come to the White House for a short visit. What a privilege, no? Anyhow, after taking over the headlines from all over the world, who wouldn’t want to meet the beautiful family?
Scholarships From The Get-Go
It isn’t much easier to raise seven children at once, and even more so financially. The selective reduction was a choice made by Bobbi McCaughey to reduce the risk of complications in pregnancy and childbirth. It could also have been a way for them to support their children with a decent life. Nevertheless, Bobbi declined, and all seven children were kept. She said they would “put it in God’s hands.” After giving birth, they received a lot of support from both the private and public sectors.
Gifts From Birth
Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey, husband, and wife, must have been overjoyed if they were pregnant with seven babies. Though they do not know where it will take them, they pushed and decided that they would have seven children. There were several people there to help them with whatever they would need. The state of Iowa offered full scholarships at all universities in the said state for all seven children. Hannibal-LaGrange University also offered them full scholarships. The generosity of the people helped to supply the McCaughey family with immense help in providing daily necessities.
The Generosity Of Strangers
Countless people were willing to help the family of McCaughey. Especially the ones who are close to them. Few of them made fundraising plans to help their families meet their financial needs. It was a huge benefit to know the family worldwide and to receive donations from individuals across the country. A private company, Procter & Gamble Co., also offered them a lifetime supply of Pampers diapers. They needed it, and it helped them save more money!
The Donations Piled In
The McCaughey family received more blessing after blessing, as many people and companies decided to donate. Few corporate officials even offered bank donations, a van, and groceries. Wow! As the Los Angeles Times said, Gerber Products Co. provided a furnace by a heating company and baby food every year. There are a lot of things that come on the family’s way! Even before the septuplets were born, some people may not have realized that McCaughey had another child for years.
Do Not Forget The Eldest Child
Most of the people who knew them from news and articles probably didn’t know they had the eldest child, especially considering their attention to the septuplets. Not as much attention has been given, like how the seven kids shocked the nation. The eldest among the siblings was Mikayla Marie, who was born twenty-one months ahead, on January 3, 1996. When her seven siblings were born, she often lent her mother a helping hand.
The eldest sister, Mikayla Marie, assisted her mom, Bobbi McCaughey, mostly in seven-sibling feeding sessions. She now had seven siblings who would eventually be her best friends so that it might have been an exciting turn of life. She didn’t even have to leave the house to play with friends, as she already has seven siblings! Now in Kansas City, Mikayla is happily married to a pastor. She gave birth in 2017 to a baby boy named Beckham.
The McCaughey Septuplets’ Sweet Dreams
Even after two years of McCaughey’s couple surprising the nation, their septuplets are still unforgotten! Wes Yoder, their media and spiritual advisor, and the president of the Nashville Ambassador Artist Agency, produced a lullaby album for the McCaughey Septuplets to celebrate their second birthday. The album was named “The McCaughey Septuplets Sweet Dreams”. Several artists have spent their time making the album for the seven children from across London to Nashville.
Artists Who Wanted To Help
A lot of Christian artists from different places had also helped contribute to the album. They were Kathie Lee Gifford, Cindy Morgan, Steeve Green, Michael Smith, Ginny Owens, Geoff Moore, Chris Rice, Sandi Patty, and Kim Hill. To provide for their family, the McCaughey couple had to turn into music. Also, they performed in church, and half the profit will be given to the foundation that they began helping out. Also, they used different methods to raise funds, shed insight and awareness about their situation.
A Book Deal As Well
Their courage was outstanding. And their decision almost two decades ago was bold and frightening because they didn’t know what would happen or the negative effects that waited for them once they had been in that position. However, as Bobbi said, all of them sounded pretty good to the whole family with all their faith and trust in God. After the release of the album, Wes Yoder was also able to make a book deal for the McCaughey family! This contains their story and reveals the faith and bravery of the family.
“This story of simple faith recounts the events leading up to, during, and following the births of the only living septuplets in the world,” the Amazon description of Book Seven from Heaven says. It reveals not only how the seven babies were born or how the McCaughey family endured hardships, but also how the couple was helped by all the people who loved them and, above all, by their strong faith. Nonetheless, after they became adults, the McCaughey’s took a life-changing decision.
They Ended Up Selling The House
As time goes by so fast, we don’t even notice people growing up around us. As the seven kids of Bobbi and Kenny grew up and left home to become empty-nesters, they sold their 5,500 sq. Ft. Home. It has seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. It is a gift from Clark Company that the married couple received back in 1998. The house was purchased by Ruth Harbor, a charitable group located in Des Moines. The organization helps with housing and welfare for young mothers.
Bobbi and Kenny have sold their house to the agency that offers shelter and support for young mothers after the septuplets left home and properly handled their lives. The McCaughey couple now lives in a house with three bedrooms. “We were blessed to receive such a wonderful gift, and nothing would be more pleasing to us than the idea of using our home as a place of refuge for others in need,” Bobbi said. Do you know where they’re going to be after leaving home, and how they’re doing now?
Kenny “Class Clown” McCaughey, Jr.
He might have seemed like the leader of the pack like the eldest in the septuplets. Yet, his siblings called Kenny McCaughey, the “School Clown.” Playing with so many children each day must have been enjoyable. It is like living with your dearest friends in a home. Kenny pursued technical training at Des Moines Area Community College to take up Construction Trade. There he stayed in the family house while he was studying.
A Big Family
They have appeared again on the show after being guests on TODAY in 1997. Just days before their 18th birthday, the McCaughey family was again invited to be guests of the show. They were interviewed and asked how they have so far managed their lives. Kenny said, “You just have a big family to hang out with a lot of brothers and sisters. You’re never alone, and there’s always someone to talk to.” He also added, “I think that’s the best thing I do.”
Kelsey “The Singer” McCaughey
At the time Kelsey was born, she weighed only over 2.4 pounds. She was the lightest among the other six babies and was born fourth in order. Kelsey was in music, as did her parents. It had been her dream. But all is not working in your favor. She put off her lifelong dream and planned to pursue music at the University of Hannibal LaGrange. In an interview with TODAY, she said, “It was a cultural shock, for sure,” when asked about her decision to go to university, which was far from their home.
“It’s been a big adjustment to be away from our parents and be away from Iowa, but I think we’ve all welcomed it and just really created new friendships and met some amazing people in a new situation,” Kelsey McCaughey said in her TODAY interview. It could be a big change for everyone, not just for Kelsey but also for her siblings. Leaving home with your family after spending your whole life, 24/7, isn’t something you can easily leave behind.
Natalie “Smarty Pants” McCaughey
It’s no secret the McCaughey septuplets did not all have safe lives when they were young. Among such, Natalie is one. She and her sister Alexis had to be fed by a pump when they were young and had severe reflux. But that didn’t impede either of them from living life. Natalie, among the other septuplets, is now known as the “Smarty Pants.” The reason why she was called by her other siblings smarty-pants was because of her desire to excel in her studies.
A Married Lady
Among the other siblings, the “Smarty Pants,” Natalie McCaughey, attended Hannibal LaGrange University much as Kelsey did. While we are not always talking about her GPA, or even though we couldn’t get updates about her studies since she was the smart one in the bunch, we know she’ll have no trouble finding the right man to love. In May 2019, Natalie married her college sweetheart, Shawn Geralds.
Nathan Is A Computer Geek
Just like Alexis and Natalie, Nathan McCaughey, born around 3 pounds in weight and fourth in baby order. He had a hard childhood as well because he has Spastic Diplegia. But it didn’t stop him from making his dreams come true and creating them. Nathan’s been into computers ever since he was a child. Therefore it is no surprise to his parents and siblings when he pursued a career in that field.
All About Computers
Nathan was starting to express his great affection for computers at a young age. He was more involved in the machines over the years. He later joined Joey, Kelsey, and Natalie in Hannibal Lagrange University studying Computer Information Systems. He also plans to try a professional career at age 22. When you are young, it must have been good to learn what to do. He just focused on one thing he wanted, and now he’s moving slowly towards his goals.
Joel “The Bookworm” McCaughey
Joel McCaughey, who had been called ‘The Bookworm’ by his siblings due to his enthusiasm for reading, was born and weighed about two pounds, and Bobbi was the last to be released from the womb of his mother. Like Nathan, Joel has a love for the computer. For him, books were just an additional activity, besides pursuing computer activities. He took up computer information systems at Hannibal LaGrange University, just like his three other siblings. It’s nice that he has someone to share his enthusiasm with, and this is, of course, Nathan Computer Geek.
Alexis Made It To The Cheerleading Squad
Alexis McCaughey was one of the young children of McCaughey who had been suffering from disabilities. She has had hypotonic quadriplegia. During his high school days, though, it might have seemed she didn’t have it at all! She finally proved after several surgeries to strengthen her leg muscles, that she was already well. As she was part of her high school cheering squad, it was a huge accomplishment for her. To her, it had been a dream come true.
Alexis McCaughey certainly could not prove she could do whatever she wanted by taking Hypotonic Quadriplegia and also by seeking early education at Hannibal LaGrange University, where her four other siblings all took their preferred courses. To follow such a career path is wonderful for Alexis because it is one of the most admirable. It demands the love for young kids, which we are quite sure it has!
Brandon Joined The Army
The choice of a career path is not as easy as it sounds. This is where your life is going to take you and revolve around you. Just the same that may be the case for everybody. One of the seven McCaughey’s, however, followed another form of profession, somewhat different from others. Brandon has agreed to join the Army and serve.
Wedding days are awesome! From the dances, guests, gifts, and programs prepared for the newly born are something to enjoy. He must have had a fun look at things in Brandon and Alana’s wedding registry, cookware, dinnerware, shop, and gadgets. If you look at the items on the list, you might suggest that the couple very often wanted to stay for dinner! So the entire family must be released!
What Bobbi Had To Say About The Kids
One of Bobbi’s superpowers is being a mother with eight children in total and raising seven children all continuously. It was also a huge challenge for her and her husband, Kenny. Things may not always go their way, but fortunately, until the sevenfold is born, they are supported by their family and friends. They got enormous love from growing individuals and companies. Her strong faith has been tested several times, but when she and her family were insane, this was the only thing he held dearly. “That was the rock we had to stand upon,” she said in a TODAY interview.
For both Kenny and Bobbi, it should have been difficult when all their kids went on and stayed at home. This was a big transition, from the fact that there were so many kids at the house. Today they may be hollow nests, as they call it, but they still love their grandson, Beckham. Only now, they are concentrating their attention on the little child and its relationship.
It is perhaps one of the saddest parts of being a parent, to leave our kids in the house. Of course, you can’t prevent them from exploring the world on their own, because sooner or later they will also build their own family. It must be sad, but it fulfills the knowledge you have done your part as a parent. Of course, the McCaughey couple has the same feeling. As Bobbi said, “It’s been very different in some respects it’s been fun because Kenny and I have managed to do a lot more things, just the two of us, but I kind of miss the business of having everyone at home. When they are home, it’s delightful and something we look forward to a lot.”
Now A Grandmother
Bobbi McCaughey, Beckham’s grandmother, was asked how she felt about the upcoming 21st birthday of the septuplets, in an interview.. “The love for them is the same, but the responsibility is so different,” she answered. Beckham, her grandson, may spend some time with her as all her children left home. It is not her duty to raise Beckham, of course, but she still looks after him as a caring grandmother together with her husband. “It’s just been fun to be able to visit and see the milestones and get to do all the fun things with (Beckham), but I don’t have to raise him.”, she added.
What Kenny Is Doing Now
We’ve always openly discussed Bobbi and the septuplets. Now let’s talk about the father of seven children, Kevin McCaughey. He was once a Chevrolet employee with a position within the finance department as a billing employee. He has decided to leave his job and follow a different path than dealing with many numbers. Kevin decided to pursue a career in public following his resignation. He gave a press conference on the “Miracle of the Birth” in a church where he and Bobbi were married. He also spoke with pro-life groups from various places in the country.
During today’s interview and on the 18th birthday of the septuplets, he explained how it felt and how his children were born. “It was watching them come out of the womb for me,” he said. He is now holding a post in a church, a deacon, whose task is to visit and manage a fund for various elder members of the church.
Helping Families With Multiples
It’s moving that Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey are also helping other families blessed with multiple children. They had to know how to bring up at once several kids because they lived to tell the story and were part of history. There are no other people in the world that know better than the McCaughey couple how many children at the same time. From the outset, they were blessed with so many things and ought to have shared these blessings with other families who had the same situation two decades ago.
Learning From The Professionals
As we know, the McCaughey couple, Kenny and Bobbi, have assisted various families in several areas. Based on her own experience, Bobbi and Kenny understood how tough it was to bring up many children at the same time; the struggles and challenges of their seven children being cared for by only the two. The couple then extended their arms to the family of Jeanette, and Mark Zimlich of Alabama, Mobile. They’ve had five times! Kenny and Bobbi offered their support and expressed their words of advice for the young couple.
Ensuring They Were Set
Not only did the McCaughey offer their help and share their wise words, but they also managed to get donations five times for the young couples! Taking us back to when there have already been so many sevenfold gifts from the McCaughey family. They were able to provide baby food, toys, clothing, and other essential products. It is hot to know that the couple could give back the blessings they received when the sevenfold was still young. Also, because of the love and blessing they received from others, they became a blessing for other people.
In November 2018, the septuplet turned 21! Therefore they are of legal age. Whether you are drinking it or just traveling the world, you can do whatever you want. This is a huge accomplishment, especially for the McCaughey couple. A sevenfold has grown into adults so beautiful, and they are happy to drink Champagne! The seven children celebrated their birthdays in different places because they are far from each other after they left their homes. But, in their family home, they had a big, complete, and happy celebration too!
When the McCaughey Septuplet was born in 1997, it was a global phenomenon. They had also received tremendous public attention. That’s what the sevenfold felt as they grew older and knew they’re not just average kids like everyone else but, of course, amazingly. They thought it was a huge accomplishment, but it’s much more surprising now that they’re grown-ups to see how they grew up as a person and followed different paths on their own. As they tried to manage their own lives, they became courageous and independent.
Own Interests & Hobbies
Even though they share their womb and grow together, the septuplets of McCaughey have different personalities that have developed themselves, and even love. They have managed to have an interest in things at such a young age. It can be fun and satisfying to be born with so many siblings and make you think you no longer need friends, as you have them in your home every day and 24 hours a day! Oh, that’s not the case with the sevenfold for McCaughey. They have managed to spend time with their friends even though their siblings are always around.
