When it comes to the global stage, it would not take more than a couple of Americans to give the entire country a bad name. There are many repercussions brought about by the negative perceptions. It can even affect foreign policy! Sadly, there are many nations that do not have a good view of tourists from the US. Do not be surprised if Americans do not feel welcome in the countries we are about to mention. Remember that while this might not always be true, it would not hurt to put in more effort to respect foreign laws, culture, and policies to improve our pretty bad rep.

Denmark

It seems like the Danish do not appreciate the ‘we’re the best’ attitude carried by Americans. After all, they have a polite culture in which people exchange pleasantries when they could. In the Nordic nation, many people believe that Americans consider themselves superior to other people in the world. Oops.

Denmark

Denmark

Russia

The icy relationship between Russia and the US began with the Cold War but has yet to truly thaw. More recently, America expressed opposition to the Russian military intervention in Ukraine, which made Americans even less popular among Russians. As a matter of fact, 71% of them have negative views about the US. Chernobyl, the hit American show, did not do much to improve things either.

Russia

Russia

Greece

A survey done by Pew revealed that 63% of the Greek population does not view Americans positively. For them, it is the American optimism that they do not like. The Mediterranean country is suffering terrible debts, which might explain why the American ‘it’ll be fine’ thinking is not popular among them. The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) holds several seats in parliament, and the members are also very critical of how rampant capitalism is in the United States.

Greece

Greece

Brazil

While Hollywood has chosen Brazil as the set location of many films, the movies normally do not show respect for Brazilian people. They tend to ignore the realities of living in Brazil. Directors and producers just use Brazilian land or homes to shoot American stories. American tourists have also received criticism because many take part in ‘poverty tourism.’ This is why you might not get a warm welcome.

Brazil

Brazil

Argentina

The United States has a pretty hostile relationship with Argentina for some time now. This cannot be solved among lawyers either. During the Great War, the US accused the South American country of human rights abuses. However, Argentineans consider the US to be the untrustworthy global agent.

Argentina

Argentina

Spain

Around 60% or over half of Spaniards have a negative view of Americans. In Spain, U.S. foreign policy was not well-received. In particular, the war on terror launched by George W. Bush and the election of Donald Trump were received badly. It seems that Spaniards would prefer investing in peace over walls.

Spain

Spain

Indonesia

Not many Americans save a lot of money to fund their travels before they leave. There are folks who just ‘wing it’ and attempt to earn money while on the road. This explains the rise of what has become known as ‘beg-packing.’ This involves tourists that wait on street corners and begging locals and other tourists for money so that they can keep traveling. You should know that there are over 31 million people living below the poverty line in Indonesia. We can totally understand why they think this is disgraceful!

Indonesia

Indonesia

Australia

For many Aussies, the American drive for power is simply feeding racism and discontent. It fuels antifa protesters and white nationalists alike as they battle for political supremacy. On top of this, Trump is very unpopular in the land down under. The bad rep of the POTUS is projected onto American tourists.

Australia

Australia

Netherlands

In the Netherlands, 59% of the locals have unfavorable views of Americans. To be specific, they find Americans paranoid, racist, dumb, overweight, and extremist. Talk about a lot of generalizations! At any rate, it is definitely a relief to know that not everyone from the United States fit that specific stereotype.

Netherlands

Netherlands

Ireland

Among the Irish, the prevailing view is that Americans are arrogant. This is even more common among merchants who conduct business with tourists from the states. Those from Ireland are especially unimpressed when Americans turn up assuming that it is possible to use US dollars in a foreign land. They do not have any sympathy for these misguided tourists. After all, Ireland has a currency of its own!

Ireland

Ireland

Egypt

Did you know that the US backed Hosni Mubarak? They failed to act accordingly when the Muslim Brotherhood was overthrown too. These are the reasons 85% of the Egyptian population does not view Americans positively. We should remind them that citizens do not have much say in political matters!

Egypt

Egypt

Belarus

The problem here is that Russia and Belarus have a great relationship. The tension that exists between Belarus and the US has been attributed to this. Apparently, 69% of Belarussians are not fans of America.

Belarus

Belarus

Slovenia

Many Slovenians have expressed their disapproval of the American leadership. However, it is possible that Slovenian-American relations might now improve. After all, FLOTUS Melania Trump is Slovenian. This claim is subject to change at any time!

Slovenia

Slovenia

Mexico

We have all heard a lot about the wall that the POTUS plans to build in his quest to separate the US and Mexico. However, the fact that Mexico will need to pay for the materials and construction has not pleased our neighbors from the south. Apparently, 65% of Mexicans do not view Americans positively.

Mexico

Mexico

Canada

But what about our northern neighbor? Apparently, it is only a little better. It turns out that 51% of the Canadian people have no love for the US. The disapproval primarily comes from the election of Trump. His policies and governing style, after all, do not really coincide with Canadian policies.

Canada

Canada

Sweden

The Swedes have criticized the fetishization of their country by Americans. They do not like having Sweden viewed as paradise on earth or a liberal utopia. On top of that, the election of Trump also caused some iciness between the two countries. Americans are viewed negatively by 51% of Swedes.

Sweden

Sweden

Belgium

Apparently, Belgians are very frustrated by how ignorant Americans are when it comes to geography. They are frustrated that many American college kids cannot even find their country on the map. After all, how can you call yourself a degree holder when you think that Belgium is a city in Germany?

Belgium

Belgium

Chile

The U.S. State Department might have described Chile as one of our strongest partners in Latin America, but 47% of people in Chile think negatively of America. If you ask us, the US government might want to reevaluate the way it conducts business with its ‘partner.’ Something clearly is not right here.

Chile

Chile

France

Many American tourists do not speak French, but a lot of the French are good at speaking English. Locals can understand the negative comments spoken in English. If you ever go to France, you should be polite in French and English at the same time! Even so, the French would not sue you as one would in the US.

France

France

Tunisia

Tunisia is an Islamic nation that expressed anger when the anti-Muslim movie Innocence of Muslim was released in 2013. Made by an American, the country did not buy and play this movie in theatres. The film is clearly part of the reason 47% of the Tunisian people disapprove of the U.S.

Tunisia

Tunisia

Germany

Germany and the US have a fraught relationship that is full of love and hate at turns. You can check your history books and see that this was the case. In general, Germans think that Americans are lazy slobs.

Germany

Germany

Pakistan

After 9/11, the US has given a lot of focus to, among others, Pakistan. The tension has transferred onto Pakistanis too. It also does not help that America has an ongoing military presence in the South Asian country. These must be the reasons that 59 to 65% of Pakistanis have negative views of Americans.

Pakistan

Pakistan

Italy

It looks like some Americans just love to show off how much they know about a country based on the movies that they saw. One Italian man was asked about the most annoying thing that American tourists do. He replied, “The hand-gesture.” We all know that he is talking about the thumb-to-forefinger gesture that is always featured in American movies about Italians. It turns out that this is not a symbol for emphasis but one that says, “What do you want?”

Thailand

We bet that you can scroll through Instagram and find photos of people feeding a bottle to or smiling with huge tigers in Thailand. We bet that you are amazed by the way they trained these animals. Sadly, the reality is that these majestic creatures are sedated and suffer damage in their claws, tendons, and teeth jus so tourists can interact with them.

Thailand

Thailand

India

While we cannot deny that India has a beautiful and rich history, the entire country was not made for Instagram photos. Prachi Vaity, a blogger based in Mumbai, is tired of hearing foreigners say stuff like, “I’m in India to find myself!” She explained further, “India is a country, not a self-help book! … Look, you can still come to India. Just leave your ‘Eat, Pray, Loving’ at the door. Your ‘self’ is not waiting patiently for you to arrive at some ashram in India, or a monastic retreat in the Himalayas. Sorry.”

India

India

Scotland

Now, we have all heard the stereotype about how loud American tourists tend to be. If you ask the Scots, however, they have a bone to pick with our “annoying accents.” Well, we are sure that they would appreciate any Braveheart impersonations even less.

Scotland

Scotland

England

It seems like American tourists are always in the tabloids for messing with the men of the Queen’s Guard. Politeness is important in the UK, so we can see why they hate rude and loud Americans.

England

England

Czech Republic

Now, it is not a secret that Americans are not the best when it comes to geography. People from the Czech Republic do not find it amusing when Americans ask, “Are Czechs the same as Russians?” Locals want to know why Americans do not get more geography education in their school. At any rate, you should avoid asking cringe-worthy questions like this one when you are in Czechia.

Czech Republic

Czech Republic

Northern Ireland

The Republic of Ireland might not be in the UK but North Ireland is! Even though it should be common knowledge by now, not many Americans are aware of this. In fact, a regular American will find it hard to grasp. Well, it can be a little confusing so allow us to help you. The United Kingdom is actually made up of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, Great Britain includes those with the exception of Northern Ireland. Just so you know, the British Islands and the British Isles are not the same either. At any rate, it would be wise to read up on any place you visit before going there.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland

Cambodia

Tourists will not be expected to know the city right away, but it is always important to be respectful and sensitive. Cambodians often complain that many Americans do not dress appropriately when they visit the Angkor Wat. Yes, they do this even if there are instructions. “Women must cover their shoulders and knees when attending the temples, out of respect to the locals and the monks that go there to pray and meditate. How many American women have I seen in tank tops and short shorts this week at Angkor Wat? Far too many. It’s grossly disrespectful and completely out of line, but something that is ‘advised’ like a cultural norm is often totally ignored by American tourists,” explained an Odyssey author.

Cambodia

Cambodia

Austria

Travelers like to see new places and experience a culture through the local cuisine. However, Austrians claim that American tourists visit their country but forego local restaurants and bakeries for the familiar McDonald’s. This has caused Austrians to believe that Americans like routine over trying new things.

Austria

Austria

Norway

Mats Andersson had this to say about us: “[Americans] imagine that everywhere they go is a theme park, put on especially for them to amuse themselves. In Svalbard, they have even been known to just wander into private homes, and get very upset when they are shown the door.” Well, this is a criticism that we can accept with no problems. No one likes a stranger randomly showing up in their home.

Norway

Norway

Jordan

People in Jordan think much like Egyptians when it comes to America. Since 2009, the way Jordanians view America has gone down by 13 points. Apparently, 85% of the local population like the US! Wow.

Jordan

Jordan

Turkey

A lot of Syrian refugees sought help in Turkey when the war started. The United States has not stepped in to intervene, which is the reason 73% of Turkish people do not view Americans in a good light.

Turkey

Turkey

Lebanon

Lebanon is yet another country in the Middle East that does not love the United States. In fact, 64% of the Lebanese population thinks positively of the US. However, there is some hope since Donald Trump was elected into power. It turns out that the Lebanese view him more favorably than those before him.

Lebanon

Lebanon

Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a Sunni Muslim country located in Central Asia. Tajiks gave the U.S. a disapproval rate of 54% in 2014. This former Soviet nation, however, gave Russia a staggering 93% approval rating! To shed some light on the matter, Tajikistan is very poor and corrupt with a struggling economy.

Tajikistan

Tajikistan

Iran

We are not surprised to see this entry on the list whatsoever. After all, the animosity between Iran and the United States go decades back. In 1979, revolutionaries entered the American embassy in Tehran and took 66 Americans hostage for 444 days. Things have not been the same since then. On top of that, The US has introduced sanctions on the West Asian country to control its nuclear capabilities.

Iran

Iran

Iraq

We are not surprised to see that Iraq has a 67% rate of disapproval towards the US. Who would not feel the same way after all the wars that destroyed their land? We are surprised that it is not any higher!

Iraq

Iraq

China

As the 4th biggest country in the world, China comes in right after the US. We get a lot of goods from the Asian country, but trade issues have caused issues. It is why 49% of the Chinese disapproves of the US.

China

China

Cuba

There was a time when Cuba and the US had a good relationship. Things have changed, and some Americans travel there illegally! Things improved during the time that Obama was in power. Americans finally got permission to go to Cuba with a few restrictions. America and Cuba are now on better terms.

Cuba

Cuba

Libya

If you are an American, it is nearly impossible to visit Libya. The government has been issuing visas to American citizens but not very often. With the number of terrorist groups in the region, it might not be the best time to travel there anyway. Libya is, it goes without saying, not all that fond of the US either.

Libya

Libya

Saudi Arabia

Even though the United States and Saudi Arabia are allies, it is not very easy for an American to visit the West Asian nation. If you are looking to get a visa, your best chances would be to teach English and work in the gas and oil industry. On top of that, the recent scandal with the murdered journalist has placed Saudi Arabia at odds with the US.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia

Yemen

The government had been concerned about possible terrorism in Yemen and has since detained hundreds of citizens from the country at Guantanamo Bay. Who could possibly blame 70% of Yemenis for disliking the States? In the survey, only 9% of the participant gave approval for American leadership.

Yemen

Yemen

Serbia

Serbia has been on bad terms with the US since the 1999 NATO bombings. There were a lot of anti-America groups across the country that claimed the US is the devil. This sentiment started when America killed 3,000 civilians during the war.

Serbia

Serbia

Malaysia

Malaysia does not approve of the US and its recent policies about Muslim countries. Apparently, only 26% of Malaysians view America in a positive light. That’s pretty low! They apparently hate American tourists, who tend to be rude and loud when they are in Malaysia.

Malaysia

Malaysia

North Korea

North Korea is not on good terms with a lot of countries, so this was a no-brainer. It turned out that the surveyors failed to find a single citizen who approved of the US. They believe that the US is a threat.

North Korea

North Korea

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan used to be a part of the Soviet Union. These days, they detest the United States. America had an airbase in the central Asian country for 12 years. In 2014, Kyrgyzstan decided not to renew this deal. The shift has pretty much ended any alliance between these two countries.

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan

Japan

Japan has become a popular tourist destination in the past couple of years. “Miyabi” is a cultured and soft area in Kyoto that the locals adore. Sadly, the city is starting to lose its touch because the number of tourists continues to grow. Even worse for the locals, their favorite restaurant and food places prioritize visitors instead. We can see just how frustrating it must be when they can’t enjoy their local food!

Japan

Iceland

Iceland has become an exciting destination for travel. It is kind of like Disneyland but for adults! There is a lot of over-tourism in the country, in part thanks to the attention it got from Game of Thrones. The fact of the matter is that having a lot of visitors over threatens the attraction areas and the environment. We understand why the locals are not very happy about it.

Iceland

Uruguay

Uruguay is located between big tourist destinations such as Argentina and Brazil. This makes it an attractive place to visit. After the legalization of marijuana, it is not surprising to hear that the South American country has seen an increase in visitors. On top of that, the Fray Bentos meatpacking facility has also contributed to the huge increase in tourists.

Uruguay

Croatia

Croatia was also used as a shooting location by the Game of Thrones crew. This is the reason the city of Dubrovnik gets a daily visitor count of up to 10,000 each day. This is one of the reasons permanent residents there went down from 5000 in 1991 to only 1157 in 2018.

Croatia

Netherlands

There is plenty of beauty and action to be found in the Netherlands. A lot of visitors are especially fond of Amsterdam, the capital. Even though the city has a population of below one million people, it gets 15 million visitors every year. It is a small city, so it is not hard to understand why locals are not fans of all the visitors that come in. Of course, they are even more unpleasant when they do not behave properly.

Netherlands

Morocco

In only a decade, Morocco has experienced a surge of 8 million visitors a year. In the beginning, the locals were glad about it but realized that it was also doing harm. The Moroccans have admitted that the rents have gone up, but the salaries have stayed the same. They have attributed it to the tourists.

Morocco

Mauritius

Mauritius is thought to be one of the most overpopulated countries in the world. This island nation is located 1200 miles from the southeast coast of the African continent. They get about 1 million visitors each year as well. It is hard to navigate through the nation because of the number of people in town.

Mauritius

Myanmar

Tourism in Myanmar is fairly new, but the residents already feel frustrated by it. Locals say that visitors going to the Valley of Temples do not have respect for it. The number of pagodas has gone down by half, which makes them more unhappy. They say that visitors climbing to the top are only helping their fall.

Myanmar

Vietnam

Halong Bay is a famous world heritage site in Vietnam. The city gets a huge influx of visitors every single year. The more visitors arrive, the higher the need for inexperienced boat workers and tour guides along the bay. It is sad to hear that the focus is now more on money instead of providing a good experience.

Vietnam

Philippines

Islands are pretty cool since they are basically a country in a country. The Palawan island is a beautiful area in the Philippines that boasts of 36,000 residents as well as 20,000 visitors. This does not make any sense to us. There is not enough accommodation or food to go around for every single person there. Locals are mad that the farmlands have been destroyed to create hotels and resorts instead. Many tourists used to visit for the natural beauty of the area, but it is now all about partying and getting a tan.

Philippines

Colombia

You might not have noticed the high number of tourists in Colombia, but the locals know all about it. Thanks to the tourism in the region, Colombia had to change development plans. This was not ideal for the locals. In Cartagena, the tourism capital of the country, foreign developers fund the development and obsess over the money from tourists. They are not concerned about affecting the locals.

Colombia

South Africa

When it comes to the continent of Africa, South Africa is a famous tourist destination. Tourists flood in on a daily basis despite the growing drought and crime issues. The locals have no issues with the visitors, but they do get frustrated by the way the property prices are going up. This is especially true for Cape Town, which tourists seem to love. The residents can hardly afford to stay there anymore.

South Africa

Portugal

Portugal, particularly Lisbon, has been experiencing a large amount of over-tourism. The capital has been benefitting from it financially at the expense of the locals. The residents there have a hard time looking for affordable housing since landlords post their listings on short-term websites instead. The worst part about this is that the ancient houses are being renovated and rented out to visitors instead.

Portugal

Oxford

Mary Clarkson, the former Lord Mayor of Oxford, has complained that a lot of locals leave Oxford from June to October to stay away from the tourists. Oxford is pretty small, so it must be hard to navigate the city when there are tourists everywhere.

Oxford

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a historical and remote site so famous that the Peruvian government had to set up a time limit for the visitors. Even more, they made a guide with 3 separate trails that the tourists have to choose from.

Machu Picchu

Palestinian Territories

Since Israel and the United States are allies, it was a given that the Palestinians are not the biggest fans of Americans. Surveys say that 66% to 72% of the population have unfavorable views of the U.S.

Palestinian Territories

China

China is on the list twice because even though Americans can generally travel easily, they have to get a visa to get into this Asian country. China wants tourists to get visas at the consulate or embassy in their state. American citizens that travel for tourism or business are often given 10-year multiple-entry visas.

China

India

India has a pretty complex visa system that begins with a pretty concise application process. People should generally use an expediting system of some sort. Those who travel for tourist reasons can get either a single-entry e-visa, which is issued online and valid for 30 days, or a 10-year multiple-entry visa.

India

Indonesia

Are you thinking of going to Bali for your next trip? If so, you will need a visa. You can get one at international airports in the Southeast Asian country or apply at an Indonesian consulate or embassy before the trip. It is very important to follow the visa process for the state that you are in.

Indonesia

Kenya

Kenya, together with many other African countries, requires American citizens to have a visa. You can get a single-entry one online or a multiple-entry visa through the Kenyan Consulate in NYC. It is also possible to get an East Africa Tourist Visa, which is recommended if you are going to be visiting specific countries in the region within a span of 90 days.
