Picking Herself Back Up
I so convinced myself that going to work and the gym were the only things I needed to accomplish each day. The one thing I felt in control of was my health, and taking responsibility for it was liberating. I started reverting to my previous, healthful eating routine. I made sure to eat an abundance of fruits and vegetables, starting the day with yogurt and granola, followed by a salad or sandwich for lunch, then rice, veggies, and protein for supper. Since I had spent the most of my life eating that way, it wasn’t difficult to accomplish.

Doing Better
Over the next eight months, I lost half a pound to a pound a week, very slowly. The Curves staff inspired me to persevere, and my confidence was enhanced when I realized that friends, family, and the gym’s trainers had noticed that I had lost weight. I also started going for walks with my friends Debi and Cindy in the mornings on Sundays. Those walks turned become our personal time to talk and vent about the unpleasant things going on in our lives—Cindy had recently received a cancer diagnosis, for example. For the following three months, I would go to work, spend the evenings and Saturdays at Curves, and then meet Debi and Cindy on Sundays.
