Unfortunately, Sonny and Cher’s relationship hit a few bumps in the road but they still showed a united front. Until 1974 rolled around. In Sonny’s diary at the time, he penned, “The public still thinks we are married, that’s the way it has to be.” Not long after though and Sonny filed for separation claiming ‘irreconcilable differences’ for the reason why. Just a week later and Cher files for divorce and charges Sonny with ‘involuntary servitude’ as she claims he is “withholding money and depriving her of their shared earnings”.

Following their divorce, Cher gave a few interviews where she revealed her pain – especially when it came to Sonny. See, Cher said that while Sonny encouraged her, he was incredibly harsh. In fact, she felt like she was “more like a golden goose than like his wife…. I forgive him, I think. He hurt me in so many ways, but there was something. He was so much more than a husband – a terrible husband, but a great mentor, a great teacher.”
