Lieutenant Uhura – Nichelle Nichols
Where do we even begin with the legendary Lieutenant Uhura? How about with the fact that Nichelle Nichols’s role of Lieutenant Uhura was groundbreaking in American society. Why? Because this was the first time that an African American female character appeared on American television and didn’t portray a servant. Once Nichols considered leaving the show however backed out when she was personally asked by the civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. to stay.
After the show she appeared in film and TV, and even released two music albums. Most remarkably though, she was a part of a special NASA project helping to recruit minority and female personnel. We told you she was legendary.
Lt. Tasha Yar – Denise Crosby
In the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Denise Crosby played the part of Security Chief Tasha Yar. However in subsequent seasons, she portrayed Yar’s own daughter, a half-Romulan Commander Sela.
After Star Trek wrapped up, Crosby appeared in a string of film and TV roles. Plus she produced and starred in the film Trekkies.
