Imagine having it all, and still being unsatisfied? Former NBA standout Chris Webber had a seemingly perfect life to onlookers, money, fame, success…what else could he possibly want? The exceptional athlete finally achieved the biggest achievement of them all, 9 years after his retirement…
Quite The Baller
Ever heard of Chris Webber? If you’re a basketball fan, or have ever watched an NBA game, we’re sure you know this guy! Years after retirement, Chris Webber is still regarded as one of the Sacramento Kings’ best centers to date…impressive!
Trophies On Trophies
Not only that, Chris has also racked up quite a number of accolades over the years. Rookie Of The Year, 5-time NBA All-Star and 5-time All-NBA Team are just a few of his impressive achievements. Although these may all sound super impressive, he claims his proudest moment, and greatest award thus far took place off the court. This prize was one he never thought he would achieve…holding a special place in his heart.
His Real Name
Many people know him by the name Chris Webber or C.Webb for short. But, did you know that his full name is actually quite long and stately sounding? Mayce Edward Christopher Webber III is the baller’s real name!!
Chris Webber is a Detroit, Michigan native, born in the chilly state in the year 1973. Basketball was instilled in Chris’ everyday life at a young age, but, similar to other athletes, he only started on his path to stardom during his high school years. Webber lead his team, Detroit Country Day School, to a MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) State Championship Title.
Growing up in Michigan, it only makes sense to be into cars! Chris Webber’s first car was a burgundy Chevy Corsica. The former NBA’er was quoted calling his “baby” his best friend.
Michigan’s Mr. Basketball
The superstar athlete was crowned Michigan’s Mr. Basketball for his incredible skills and achievements on the court. Each state crowns the best high school player with this impressive accolade.
After graduating high school, Chris went on to study and play ball at the University of Michigan- Go Wolverines! During his Freshman year he played an integral part in the team’s Fab Five; a group of stand-out talent freshman players. Chris was #4 during his time at Michigan.
From College To The NBA
A Hip-Hop vibe in basketball? Yep, you read that right. Michigan’s Fab Five were supposedly responsible for giving the game a hip-hop vibe. While Webber was on the team, the Wolverines appeared in two NCAA finals…not too shabby! Even more impressively, four out of the five Fab 5 members went on to play in the NBA! But, Chris and his successful teammates ran into a major scandal that almost ruined their careers…
A Major Scandal
Chris Webber was tied to the mid 90’s University of Michigan Basketball scandal. After being found guilty, the tremendous athlete was stripped of all of his college awards, leaving the University empty-handed. Webber was later convicted of perjury after it was uncovered that he had received more than $200,000 in cash from local boosters.
Trouble With The Law
The big publicized scandal during his college days wasn’t the last time Webber came face-to-face with the law. In the year 1998, the professional athlete found himself in hot water once again, and not just with one offense…but three! Not only was he charged with marijuana possession, but second-degree assault, and a DUI as well. The lucky guy got out of the more serious charges and was only forced to pay $560 USD for his minor infractions. We hope Chris got his ducks in a row after these big mess-ups…
You won’t believe what happened next! Instead of getting his affairs in order, and staying under the radar, Chris finds himself in trouble with the law…again! That same year he was stopped by U.S. customs in Puerto Rico.
Fila Sneaker Launch
Chris was stopped for the possession of marijuana in his luggage. He was on his way to Barbados to promote a new sneaker launch for the company Fila. The sportswear company later dropped Chris, and charged him with $2.61 million USD for breach of contract.
During the 1993 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships, Chris made an infamous timeout call that cost his team the title. With just 10 seconds left on the clock in the 4th quarter, the Michigan Wolverines were down 73-71 to the North Carolina Tar Heels. Chris called for a timeout, not realizing his team didn’t have any left…! This resulted in a technical foul, and a big loss for the Wolverines. We’re sure he beats himself up over this mistake to this day…poor guy!
Like many other NBA stars, Chris also dabbled in the rap scene a bit. He released a rap album titled ‘2 Much Drama’ in 1999. There was even a music video created for the track ‘Gangsta, Gangsta’.
The No. 1 NBA Draft Pick
Not many players can say that they were the #1 Draft Pick…it is quite an honor! The Orlando Magic drafted Chris as the overall No. 1 pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. This made Weber only 15 years old…the second player to ever accomplish this, after Magic Johnson!
Though, he wasn’t on the Orlando Magic for long, he was immediately traded to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for 4 of their players. The college stand-out was just as impressive in the pros, guiding his team to the playoffs and being named NBA Rookie of the Year.
The Golden State Warriors signed Chris to a $74.4 million contract. This was for his rookie year!! That number is quite impressive in and of itself.
The Best Of Friends
After playing for Golden State, Chris was then traded to the Washington Bullets, presently called the Washington Wizards. He joined his old Fab 5 teammate Juwan Howard, the two picking up their close friendship where they left off.
Chris & Tyra
Back in the day, Chris Webber was dating supermodel Tyra Banks! Tyra was often spotted at Sacramento Kings games. The couple dated from 2002 until 2004 before calling it quits.
Washington D.C. Here We Come!
During Chris’ time in D.C., he guided the team to their first playoffs in over a decade, earning him his first All-Star team nomination for his efforts. After his success with the Bullets, he later returned to California, joining the Sacramento Kings in 1998.
Due to the Sacramento Kings’ less than good luck, Chris was apprehensive to join the franchise. Interestingly enough however, Webber played the finest basketball of his career while wearing a Kings jersey.
Sacramento was known in the league as being a losing team, but, Chris did the impossible and nearly brought the team to an NBA Finals…pretty impressive for a team who hasn’t won the title since the year 1951!!! We can guess that the Sacramento fans were happy to have him!
NBA Top Power Forward
Chris’ time in Sacramento solidified his spot as one of the NBA’s top power forwards. During the 2000-2001 season, he received All-Star team selections, and clocked a career-high of 27.1 points. These achievements led him to receive a 7 year contract worth $127 million USD with the Kings.
An Incredible Season
Webber didn’t take this amazing deal lightly…he showed up for his team, proving his superb talent. He ended up driving the Kings to a record-breaking season with 61 wins and only 21 losses. During the 2002 Western Conference Finals, the L.A. Lakers ended up unexpectedly beating the Kings, crushing the team’s dreams of appearing in a championship in over 50 years. During Chris’ last years with the Kings, he ran into injuries, later joining the Philadelphia 76ers in 2005.
Better Luck Next Time
Unfortunately, he wasn’t nearly as successful with the 76ers franchise as he was with the Sacramento Kings. After just two short years, he returned to his home state of Michigan, where he joined the Detroit Pistons.
A Shocking Injury
After playing with the Pistons, he got traded again, in the year 2008, back to the Golden State Warriors…we guess he missed the sunny state of Cali! After only nine games, he shockingly halted his career due to a knee injury that was worsening, rather than improving. Fans were in angst, unsure of the player’s next move.
With his injuries only getting worse, Webber retired in the year 2008, after 15 years in the league. He ended his career at 35 years old, and with some impressive stats! He finished with an average of 20.7 points, 4.2 assists and 9.8 rebounds per game. We hope the star was happy with his amazing career in the NBA…we sure are!
Chris Webber was a legend. He averaged 21.6 ppg, 10.1 rpg and 4.4 apg through his first 13 seasons in the NBA Wilt Chamberlain is the only other player ever to accomplish that.
Chris Webber was on the Sacramento Kings from 1998-2004. Due to his exceptional skills on the court and all he did for the team, they honored the player by retiring his number and commemorating him. Look, the poster is bigger than him!!
The NBA Hall OF Fame
Chris has gained his legendary status as a veteran player and has hands down achieved more than most NBA players achieve in a life time, both on and off the court. Throughout his epic career, Webber averaged 20.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. Many basketball fans ponder the exact same question…when will Chris Webber be inducted into the Hall Of Fame? We’re still waiting for his much-deserved spot!
Only A Matter Of Time
While Chris has racked up countless accolades, including 5 All-Star Awards, 5 time All-NBA Awards, and is a Sacremento Kings legend, he was actually nominated for the Hall Of Fame at least six times. While he was shortlisted as a finalist in 2017 and 2018, many Kings fans and sports media alike seem baffled that Chris Webber was once again left out. After the winners were officially announced in 2018, SB Nation’s Tom Ziller wrote bluntly that Webber belongs in the line-up so “Stop snubbing him.” We’re sure he’ll make it one day soon, and it will be well worth the wait!
Following his retirement, Chris Webber jumped into other areas of work, proving to the world his talent off the court. In the domain of sports, he made an appearance as an analyst on shows like the NBA’s Gametime Live series and and TNT’s Inside the NBA.
Chris’s Broadcasting Career
It seems Webber made the right decision by taking his talents to the other side of the court. The NBA legend has since enjoyed a successful career behind the commentary box as a broadcaster, analyst and panelist. Well he definitely has the personality for it, and we’re sure he knows a thing or too about the game. Since 2017, Webber has also become a regular panelist on TNT’s Monday coverage called ‘Players Only’. This show invites former NBA ‘players only’ to become studio analysts, play by play announcers, and color analysts for each game. Webber has also signaled that he has bigger plans and is setting his sights on becoming an NBA General Manager and even an owner himself.
Staying In The Game As A Presenter
Chris explained in an interview with Unproxx how his career as a presenter helps keep him connected to the game after retiring as a player. However he did say the game is “not the same these days”, but “the first thing is my rookies are still playing the game…., so these guys that you played with and you have relationships with mean you’re never really too far from the game. And the top players in high school and college, they reach out and call and ask for advice.” He added how “Hopefully, I can never get out of it. I don’t think you ever get too old for the game or have a disconnect. As long as you stay in the gym and stay in the know, you’re OK.”
Quite The Comedian
Who knew that Chris Webber was quite the comedian?! The athlete posted on his Twitter account, “Guess they didn’t know how tall I am. Can’t get my legs under the table. LA Lakers vs UtahJazz”.
Quite The Collector
Chris Webber is not a one hit wonder; the professional athlete is also quite interested in art! Chris owns a rare collection of African-American artifacts. His pieces are on display at Central Library in Sacramento, California. It started as an interest in the cultural history of African Americans, and became a full-fledged art collection! “I just thought I was going to put it in the hallway of my house. My friends were like, ‘You’re corny. You’re a nerd.’ I thought no one would care” Webber states. Today, Webber’s collection is regularly exhibited at museums and public buildings across the United States. His mother (below) was the one who inspired Chris to begin collecting, as she had an array of art around their home as Chris was growing up.
Chris is very well-spoken and charismatic. Can you believe he’s been a guest on the Jay Leno, David Letterman and Bill Maher shows?!
Switching to the culinary world, he opened a restaurant in Sacramento, California which he called Center Court with C Webb.
Film & TV
Chris Webber has even dabbled in the film and TV industry! Not only is he a producer, but he also acts! He was in the 2015 film Unexpected, and Magic Johnson’s 2015 film Somewhere in the Middle. Chris is most notable for his appearance in the comedy Uncle Drew.
Talented On & Off The Court
The former-pro also founded an investment company, and acted on the comedy Uncle Drew, where he played an aging preacher. It is safe to say that Chris Webber is quite the talented fella!
Playing The Preacher On Uncle Drew
When Chris Webber fine-tuned his acting skills to play the Preacher in the hit movie Uncle Drew, he talked to Uproxx about the movie, explaining that he “didn’t need to do much studying to get his role down”. In fact, he said that “I was familiar with the role of the preacher from my history in growing up, and so there was inspiration I took from some people….It was a lot of fun because I did it with guys that are friends of mine, and so I was very comfortable with that.”
Just The Start Of His Acting Career?
Chris also explained to Uproxx that he had been considering an acting career for a while, even while he was still playing in the NBA. He explained how he “talked to several actors and worked on acting over the years, believing that there may be an opportunity when I was done playing to concentrate on that”. So what’s next for Chris? Will he be focusing on perfecting his acting talents? Well, there are rumors of a sequel movie to Uncle Drew, so we’ll have to wait and see what other acting tricks Chris has in store for us all…
Chris Webber recently dished that he will begin a production company! Webber Productions will make sports films and documentaries focusing on social issues and sports. Chris also let on that his company will be involved in cultural exhibitions, as well as music and film projects. “I am happy to start a company with a man like Peter Gilbert, who has proven to be one of the best in documentary film work. I look forward to learning from him and telling great stories around my passions, my community and my world with him,” Webber said.
Chris seems to be a man of many talents, and in October 2018 he transitioned from acting to becoming an Executive Producer on the raw documentary ‘Charm City’. It has it’s first screening in New York, Webber tweeted how “I am proud to be part of this film that features some of #Baltimore’s many residents who are leading with love to make #CharmCity a better place. CHARM CITY delivers a candid portrait of citizens, police, community advocates, and government officials on the frontlines during three years of unparalleled, escalating violence in Baltimore. The film highlights the positive actions undertaken by groups and individuals, optimistically offering humanity as common ground.”
Charm City Awards & Nominations
The documentary received critical acclaim far and wide, with the New York Times dubbing it “Gripping” and Film Festival Day labeling it “A vibrant tapestry”. It was also nominated for the Tribeca Film Festival, Human Rights Watch Film Festival and more. Chris also recently announced on Twitter that “our Documentary ‘Charm City’ has been short listed by the Academy Awards!!! Congratulations to to our team, but more importantly the community leaders… your lives made this possible”. Wow!
From Rapper To Producer
His list of talents never seem to end. While Webber had tried to launch his rapper career earlier in the game, his ‘failed rap attempt’ actually helped him transition his music focus from rapping to producing. Chris has actually dabbled in the music industry for a few years, and even produced tracks with the legendary rapper, Nas. Chris provided the beat behind some of Nas’ most successful songs, like “Blunt Ashes” from Nas’ eighth studio album, ‘Hip Hop is Dead’.
Chris The Producer
Chris has quite an impressive Production Catalogue and he has received critical acclaim far and wide. Zeus magazine praise him for providing “trap’s energizing pulse” and his ability to “diversify his instrumentals through working with varied artists”. Well his production feats are quite ecclectic, ranging from GOOD Music’s “Mercy” to the producer behind Miley Cyrus’ 2013 anthem, “We Can’t Stop.” Little did we know that he provided the hip hop beat that helped take the world by storm for Rae Shremmurd’s “Black Beatles”, and worked on the production of Beyonce’s “Formation”. Just wow!
Chris Webber and Magic Johnson are quite good friends IRL. Both men went to Michigan State for college, at different times of course. Chris tweeted this photo with the caption “@magicjohnson my mentor and friend since age 14 #michigansfinest”.
It’s Always Love For Sacremento
In October 2018, Chris took time out of his busy schedule to make a guest appearance at the courtside of his old team, the Sacremento Kings. As he sat on the front row to watch the big game from the court, and the camera panned in on him, he took the opportunit to stand up to the crowd and show his love for his beloved team. Aw!
He Never Stops
Chris Webber never stops! The talented guy recently announced that he’s writing a book! “You’re about to have a lot more to talk about, because I have a book that’s coming out this summer that’s going to tell the truth, because everything you’ve heard has been stories of writers that weren’t there or people that wanted to lie, so we’re going to shock the world with a book and a documentary” Webber said.
Since Chris is putting together a documentary of his life, it only makes sense that he visited the General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck plant. His father was an employee for 30 years! The former NBA’er met workers and checked out GM’s famous Volt.
With all of his money and fame, Chris Webber has put his name to good use. He founded an NGO in 1993 called The Timeout Foundation, catered around at-risk youth. The philanthropic world has recognized his generosity, awarding him the very first Sacramento Kings/Oscar Robertson Triple Double Award.
He then created an initiative that distributes free basketball tickets to young fans…over 3,000 tickets have been given out thus far! We love those in the spotlight who give back to the community…way to go Chris!
Wish Maker Of The Year
In 2003, Chris Webber was honored as the Sacramento Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Wish Maker of the Year!
Chris Webber Foundation
As part of his commitment to use his influence and power to give back to this community and inspire youths, Chris founded his own self-titled Chris Webber Foundation. The collective initiative is designed to provide “positive educational and recreational opportunities to youths” and specifically targets “At-Risk/Disadvantaged Youths, Children, Education, Literacy”. The Foundation is geared to ‘provide literacy skills and encourage and motivate children to read’ and distributes books to newborns and children in Detroit to “encourage them to start home libraries”. Could he get any better!?
Chris Webber’s Celebrity Bada Bling Weekend
Chris Webber showed us all what an all-round popular and good guy he is by hosting a series of star-studded weekends in Las Vegas, dubbed the Celebrity Bada Bling Weekend. For three years in a row, top celebrities flocked to the weekender to help raise money for the Chris Webber Foundation. His guests are treated to special events like a celebrity poker game, VIP party, live performances, a live auction, and a private party with celebrity athletes and a host of colorful guests.
Michigan From The Heart
Chris Webber still takes ‘timeout’ to focus on giving back to the community and inspire the youth in his home city. He recently posted this picture spending the day helping out the Michigan from The Heart Non Profit organization. He captioned how the org “supports young Patients at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. I had the pleasure of working with them my freshman year when I was a young Fiver..They change lives. Come hang out with me-let’s inspire!!”
Chris Still Has People Yell ‘Timeout’
One of the most burning questions on everyone’s lips, is even though Chris has achieved so much during his NBA career, and dabbled in the world music, production, acting and more, will he ever live the ‘Timeout’ gaffe down? Well many fans still associate him with the incident and still comment on his posts and yell ‘timeout’ to him now. Still, Chris seems to take it all off the cuff and doesn’t let it get to him. He even put the scandal to good use and started a charitable organization called the Timeout Foundation!
Michigan State’s head basketball coach Patrick Izzo dished to fans that Chris Webber was the only recruit who made him cry. Chris went on to say, “Coach Izzo is a big part of my book. I consider him a friend, I’ve known him since I was about 15 years old. … I love Coach Izzo, because when he goes into kids’ houses and he talks to kids, and he says what he says and he makes them promises, he holds true to those promises. Tom Izzo is one of the best men that I know.”
While Chris and longtime friend and Fab 5 teammate Jalen Rose have had their fair share of ons and offs, the two are definitely buds no longer. Things heated up quite a bit between the men after the release of ESPN’s documentary The Fab 5.
“I’m Over It”
After the documentary’s release, Chris decided to get some things straight about the big timeout scandal. “I know that the ‘Fab Five’ documentary makes it seem like, ‘Oh, my God, I’m so scared to talk about it,’ but the truth is I got over it a long time ago. I’ve always tried to embrace it.”
Chris’s Occasional Return To The Game
Even though Chris is retired, he is still remembered fondly and has a legendary status as part of Michigan’s legendary Fab Five. So occasionally he gets the opportunity to get back in the game and inspire new players. In 2018, he was invited by Jim Harbaugh to be an honorary captain for the Michigan football team . Webber was touched and accepted the offer during an appearance on WTKA’s “The M Zone” show to promote his charity “Michigan From the Heart Radiothon”. Harbaugh said Webber will have to decide which game he wanted to be captain for and he replied “I would definitely be honored, coach…as you know, and getting to speak to you over the years, I love what you’ve done with the program…and you know I would do anything for you.” Aw!
Michigan For Life
Chris Webber was and will always be apart of the Michigan State Enterprise. When Chris agreed to be an honorary captain for a Michigan football game, his fans were clearly thrilled for his appearance!
After retirement, Chris took another big step in his life…this time in the love department. In the year 2009, he wed his long-term girlfriend Erika Dates. The two had a romantic ceremony with 200 of their closest friends and family in attendance.
The pair were excited to start a family right away, but were discouraged when fertility issues prevented this from occurring. Doctors alerted the couple that they might never be able to conceive a child…they were understandably heartbroken.
We cant imagine how tough this time was for the couple. After 7 of years of trying to conceive they were about to give up. Until the unthinkable happened…
Double The Fun
The couple were expecting!!! In 2017, Erika gave birth to twins: a girl and a boy! We can’t imagine how excited the couple must have been when they heard the news! Chris and Erika made the announcement via Instagram with this adorable photo.
Erika couldn’t contain her excitement over their two bundles of joy either, posting a picture hours later of the twins with their dad holding up a “peace sign”. Those are the faces of two extremely proud parents!
Chris posted a photo, the caption read, “After many years of trying and more than a few heartbreaks, we were blessed with these little ones”, along with the hashtags #godsgrace and #worththewait.
Two Bundles Of Joy
Erika posted another photo, “Grateful… 7 years waiting for our family to grow, and we were double blessed. Never underestimate the power of prayer, even when ‘they’ tell you it’s impossible.” How cute are these two!
After spending such a long time trying to conceive, when their twin babies were finally welcomed into the world, it was finally a dream come true for Chris and his wife. When Webber posted this photo after the twins were born, and it seems he couple were more than ready to embrace their new family life with open arms!
Parenting Can Be Tiring
Whilst Chris might be an unstoppable force on the court, and a fierce gym buddy, but he’s soon finding out the hard way that looking after twins can be one of the most tiring job he has ever attempted. His wife Erica probably saw the funny side when she posted this hilariously adorable photo of him lying on the ground next to his kids on her Instagram. And as the kids try to poke their daddy in the face, it’s already clear who the real bosses are in the Webber household!
Like Father, Like Son
How amazing is this photo meme someone created of Chris and his son…classic!
It’s The Simple Things
Even though Chris has become a legendary NBA player, won countless awards and is so ambitious in his career, he still manages to stay humble, and appreciate the ‘simple things’. He recently posted this picture of family fun at Christmas time, and it seems to us that his wife and adorable kids still seem to be his most prized possessions.
A Real Family Affair
As most parents will testify, the reality of family life with small children is that no matter how much you want it to, life never quite goes to plan. Erica posted this candid and adorable photo on Instagram during Christmas time. Even though the family are all dressed in their finest gowns and ready for their Christmas portrait, the kids clearly had other ideas and their son is trying to scramble out of Chris’s arms, while Erica holds her dress up to stop tripping over and reveal her slipper boots. They seem to be taking it all in their stride though and embracing their new life as a real family.
Chris seems to be embracing life as a hands-on- dad, and spent his Christmas vacation playing with his kids and spending quality time with his young family. Even though Chris has earned a reputation as a hardcore baller, actor, producer and presenter, his kids seem to bring out his playful side and he looks like he’s still a big kid at heart!
“All in his time. Thank you to all of our family and friends and even strangers who shared our journey and kept us encouraged.” We love this fun family outing pic!
Later that month, American Men’s Magazine Esquire, interviewed the NBA retiree on all things family. He shared personal details with the publication, “Being a father has taken the edge off. It’s just something my wife and I have been praying for and working toward for years. To have it happen is just – s***, I don’t know what to say. It’s the best feeling in the world.” Chris has finally achieved everything he could have possibly imagined!
Chris was quoted saying, “I don’t get any sleep, but I’m the oldest of five, and I used to do a lot of babysitting growing up. I have a big family, so we’re used to that. But it’s amazing just seeing something that’s your own, grow and develop. I’m just in awe. Most days it’s laughing and crying at the fact that something like this happened.”
Basketball and fame was never enough for Chris, he can finally relax knowing he has two beautiful babies with the love of his life…what a storybook ending, if we do say so ourselves.
