Mulholland Drive
Mulholland Drive is not the first film to take a shot at perfecting the idea of surrealism, nor is it the only one, but David Lynch translates the idea of surrealism into this film perfectly. He blurs the lines between what is a dream and what is reality, which creates a film that is disturbing yet amazing. The movie is so great that it has even been named the greatest movie of the 21st century by the BBC.

This science-fiction romance that ended up being a top hit was written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze. The future is set, but the future is still set. The film follows Theodore Twombly through Joaquin Phoenix’s recent divorce. By buying an operating system, he tries to mend his broken heart, but he ends up loving it. There’s so much to play with throughout this film—the emotions, camerawork, colors, all—and the cast and crew just hit it out of the park.
