Fishers stole baby whales from the sea and sold them for profit in places like Sea World, according to the documentary Blackfish. Sheila’s backstory is sad but not out of the ordinary. Almost all of these species are not adequately cared for because they are constantly exploited for entertainment, and they eventually live short, miserable lives. Sheila’s rescuers had hoped that she would not suffer the same misfortune.

Sheila was in such bad shape that the US Department of Agriculture decided to give her to an animal welfare organization called the In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Centre. It’s a company that assists stranded animals in their recovery and treatment. The news was not encouraging. If Sheila’s health did not improve, In Sync said they would seriously consider euthanizing her. Sheila’s chances of survival are slim…
