According to the BLS, there are around 3.1 million registered nurses who currently have a job in the US in 2018. 60% of those jobs are in hospital work, followed by 18% in ambulatory services, 7% in nursing/residential care facilities, 5% on government, and 3% at educational services. There are also nurse staffing agencies, which helped temporarily or permanently filling in job openings in US hospitals. These are becoming more prevalent as job vacancies remain high throughout.

Nurses On-Call

Nurses usually work in shifts in order to continue providing 24-hour care, which could include weekends, nights, or even holidays. Most nurses are also on call, which means there would come a time where they must be needed at such short notice. Data from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing lists nurses as having the largest sector of the healthcare workforce, and they also provide the most long-term one of the primary providers of hospital patient care in the US.
