The Director
Can you imagine how this movie would have turned out if it starred John Travolta, Dave Chappelle, and was directed by Terry Gilliam? It turns out that Gilliam and Barry Sonnenfeld turned down the chance to direct the movie. It’s crazy to think about how different the movie would have been if these choices were made at the start.
Historical Accuracy
Just 90 minutes after reading the script, Tom Hanks called up director Robert Zemeckis to tell him he would play the lead character. However, he had one main concern. The film had to be historically accurate. Zemeckis was determined to make the screenplay as factually and historically accurate. Naturally, the story is fiction, but it still takes place on America’s historical timeline. Hanks then said he wasn’t sure how Southern to make the voice, but the director insisted that he keep it as strong as the novel.
