New Success
It came as no surprise that Mary Lou Retton would also achieve greatness now that the Karolyis were coaching her. During the 1984 Olympics, she was the first non-Eastern European woman to take home the individual all-around gold. Retton was able to do this by overshadowing Ecaterina Szabo of Romania.
Keeping Distance
Although Nadia did not hold a grudge against her old coach, she still felt rather hurt by how things turned out. To make things even worse, the Romanian government also forbade her from communicating with Bela in anyway. That was when she realized it was time to leave the country.
